Little Field Mouse Adventure: It’s All Because of Little Field Mouse
Mr. Mouse, Hal, and Mrs. Mouse, Irene, lived in a burrow by an old locust tree.
They grew peanuts and corn beside their burrow. That was enough to feed them from spring until winter. Of course, sometimes they would also eat wild berries that grew in the bushes.
Because they were afraid of cats, snakes, and owls, they had never ventured beyond the bushes.
One spring morning, their friend Mrs. Field Mouse came to visit with her son, Little Field Mouse.
“I need to go out for a while, and I’d like you to take care of my son. I’ll come to pick him up after dinner,” said Mrs. Field Mouse.
“We’d be happy to take care of him,” Mr. and Mrs. Mouse said cheerfully.
Little Field Mouse was a lively little fellow who loved to hop, run, and gnaw on things. It seemed he was never still for a moment.
Mr. and Mrs. Mouse didn’t have any children of their own, so they were very fond of Little Field Mouse.
“Little one, come on, let’s go weed the cornfield together.”
Of course, Little Field Mouse didn’t like weeding. He hopped and ran all over the cornfield.
In no time, he was nowhere to be seen.
Oh no, Little Field Mouse was gone.
Mr. and Mrs. Mouse were very worried. They searched everywhere under the big locust tree and in the bushes but couldn’t find him.
Mr. Mouse said to Mrs. Mouse, “I’ll go check over there, and you look the other way.”
Mrs. Mouse kept walking west. She arrived in a valley, such a beautiful valley, but she had no time to stop and enjoy it. Besides searching for Little Field Mouse, she also had to be on the lookout for bobcats.
Mr. Mouse kept walking east. He reached a pond, such a charming pond, but he had no time to stop and admire it. Besides searching for Little Field Mouse, he also had to be wary of wild cats.
Mr. and Mrs. Mouse continued their search. They passed through meadows, flower fields, and orchards…
But there was still no sign of Little Field Mouse.
When the sun began to set, Mr. and Mrs. Mouse suddenly thought: Could Little Field Mouse have already gone home?
So, they hurried back home.
Sure enough, Little Field Mouse was hopping and jumping under the old locust tree.
“Where did you go? I’ve been looking for you for so long,” said Little Field Mouse.
“We were looking for you too,” Hal and Irene replied.
After dinner, Mrs. Field Mouse took Little Field Mouse home.
“Mrs. Mouse, I saw a charming little pond earlier. I’d love to feel the damp breeze there and listen to the calls of the bluebirds,” said Mr. Mouse, sitting under the old locust tree and enjoying the evening breeze.
“Mr. Mouse, I passed a beautiful valley earlier, with swarms of butterflies flying around. The flowers were blooming so beautifully, I really wanted to stop and take a good look,” said Mrs. Mouse, sitting under the old locust tree, gazing at the moon.
“Let’s not be afraid of bobcats and wild cats anymore. Let’s go out more often; it’s so wonderful out there!” said Mrs. Mouse.
Mr. Mouse completely agreed. That very night, they prepared some dry food and a backpack, planning to set off on a journey the next day.
