Little Crab Story: The Little Crab’s Big Claws

The little crab loved his two big, claw-like pincers. No matter who he met, he would always raise his claws and show them off with a few “click-clack” sounds. He felt so proud of his big pincers that even the way he walked sideways was filled with swagger.

A group of small grass carp were chasing each other and playing freely in the pond. The little crab saw them and wanted to join in their game. He decided to surprise them by hiding behind a rock. When the little fish swam nearby, the little crab suddenly jumped out, raising his big pincers with a “click-clack.” But before he could even say, “Let’s play together,” the little fish were so frightened that they scattered in all directions.

The little crab felt a bit disappointed that he couldn’t play with the fish, but this feeling quickly faded. “Doesn’t their fear of me show just how powerful I am?” thought the little crab, and he cheered up. He waved his big claws a few times, thinking he must look so cool.

Ahead, wasn’t that a clam? It was lying there, lazily basking in the sun at the shallow edge of the pond, its shell wide open. Surrounded by the warm water, the clam must have been feeling very comfortable. The little crab wanted to lie beside the clam and bask in the sun too.

But before he did, the little crab thought it might be fun to scare the clam first. He sneaked up to the clam, grabbed its shell with his big pincers, and sprayed water from his mouth, trying to tickle the clam. The clam, who had been dreaming, was startled and snapped its shell shut with a loud “clack.” The little crab’s pincers were trapped before he could pull them out. He gasped in pain and struggled to free his claws from the clam’s shell.

“Bang, bang,” the little crab knocked on the clam’s shell with his pincers, angrily saying, “I was just trying to be your friend, but you almost broke my claws!”

“Hey, what’s that?” The little crab suddenly noticed a strange thing ahead, and he forgot all about being angry with the clam. “Haha, why does that look like a worm?”

“Hey there, when did you learn to swim?” The little crab said, curiously raising his pincers to touch the worm-like thing.

“Don’t touch it!” A nearby round stone spoke. The little crab quickly withdrew his pincers, startled. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be an old turtle talking: “That’s a fishing bait dropped by humans. If you touch it, you’ll be pulled out of the water and end up as their dinner.”

“So what? What can it do to me?” The little crab proudly raised his big pincers and clicked them twice. “I’ve got these… who am I afraid of?”

As the little crab was saying “these” at the bottom of the pond, by the time he said “afraid of whom,” he was already being yanked out of the water by a nearly invisible, thin line.

Standing on the pond’s edge was indeed a person. He was holding a fishing rod high in the air, wearing a sun hat on his head and dark sunglasses that completely hid his eyes, making him look terrifying!

The old turtle had shouted, “Let go quickly!” But when the little crab saw those sunglasses, he forgot everything.

The little crab thought, “This is it, I’m done for.” He regretted not listening to the old turtle, realizing that now he would likely end up as a tasty meal for the human. The sunglasses-wearing person walked closer, and the little crab, retreating towards the pond, waved his big claws in a final “click-clack” defiance.

“I thought it was that old turtle!” the person with the sunglasses sneered coldly and then kicked the little crab. The little crab felt a sharp pain as his two big pincers were kicked off.

Without his big claws, the little crab felt himself being lifted into the air. The feeling of flying was wonderful—he was going back to the pond…
