Little Bear Stories: Little Bear Digs a Well
The mountain stream had dried up, and everyone said it was because the loggers had cut down too many trees. Little Bear lived on the mountain, and to drink water, he had to walk a long way down the mountain path. But he couldn’t move elsewhere, so he thought about digging a well. With a well, he wouldn’t have to worry about not having water to drink.
Digging a well wasn’t something that could be done quickly, so Little Bear wanted to find others to help him dig.
First, Little Bear went to see Goat. Goat said, “I’m old, my back is almost broken; I can’t dig.” Little Bear was a bit disappointed and then went to find Deer. Deer said, “I just gave birth to a few fawns, I don’t have time.” Having no other choice, Little Bear then went to see Little Rabbit. Little Rabbit said, “I run around everywhere every day; whenever I see water, I just drink a little. I don’t need a well.” Little Bear then went to find Bird, Pangolin, Monkey, and other friends, but they all refused.
Even though no one was willing to help, Little Bear didn’t want to give up: “I’ll dig it myself, even though it’s slow, it will eventually be finished!”
Digging the well alone was, of course, very hard, but Little Bear wasn’t afraid. His hands developed blisters from digging, which hurt at the slightest touch, but he persisted, and eventually, the blisters turned into thick calluses. After half a year, the well was finally dug, and Little Bear drank the sweet well water, shedding tears of joy.
When Little Bear’s friends heard about it, they all rushed over to see. From a distance, they saw a sign standing by the well, and they stopped, angrily saying, “Go back, go back, he’s going to charge us money!” Bird retorted, “You haven’t even seen what’s written on the sign. How do you know that Little Bear won’t let us draw water or that he’ll charge us?” Goat said, “You fly fast, go see what it says.” Bird quickly flew back and said excitedly, “Everyone, come over! The words were written by Little Bear; it says we can all draw water, we can all draw water!”
Suddenly, everyone felt as if they couldn’t move their feet. They stood together, looking at each other, with their faces turning redder and redder.
