Kids story: Bobo the Curious Dog
Bobo is a spotted dog who loves to ask questions. No matter what happens, he always wants to get to the bottom of things.
One day, Bobo found something in the field that was smaller than a soccer ball, larger than a walnut, and looked like a clump of dirt. He thought to himself, “What on earth is this?”
Just then, Grandpa Goat was passing by not far away. Bobo quickly ran over and politely asked, “Grandpa Goat, what is this strange thing?”
“Oh, this thing?” Grandpa Goat stroked his beard and said, “We call it a yam egg.”
“Yam egg? How interesting. This name is really fun!”
Grandpa Goat left, and Bobo looked at the yam egg in his hand, muttering to himself, “Why call it that? It’s such a strange name.”
Just as Bobo was feeling curious about the name, Uncle Bear rode by on his bicycle. Bobo stopped Uncle Bear and raised the strange object in his hand, politely asking, “Uncle Bear, why is this thing called a yam egg?”
Uncle Bear looked at the strange object in Bobo’s hand and couldn’t help but laugh: “Ha ha, how can this be called a yam egg? This is clearly a potato!”
“What? A potato?” Bobo was confused. Holding the strange object, he thought as he walked: “In such a short time, I’ve learned two names. I’ll go ask Grandpa Cow; maybe he will tell me an even fresher name.”
Bobo hurried to Grandpa Cow’s house and, upon seeing him, asked, “Why is this thing called both yam egg and potato?”
“What yam egg and potato?” Grandpa Cow was puzzled by Bobo’s question. He took the strange object from Bobo’s hand, looked at it, and said, “Oh, this is a potato!”
Sure enough, that was yet another new name! Bobo was even more puzzled. He decided to find Teacher Horse to clarify the names of this object with three names.
Teacher Horse was busy cleaning at home. Bobo approached him and politely asked, “Teacher Horse, why does this thing have three names?”
Teacher Horse took the object from Bobo, examined it, and said, “Actually, this object’s scientific name is ‘Solanum tuberosum’ (potato). Yam egg and potato are names used in certain regions, while ‘potato’ is its general term. It mainly contains starch and can be steamed, boiled, stir-fried, stewed, or served cold.”
Seeing that Bobo was so earnest, Teacher Horse continued, “You are called Bobo, you are also known as the spotted dog. Your mom calls you ‘Baby’ or ‘Good Boy,’ and since you love to ask questions, people also call you ‘Little Question Mark.’ Adding all these names together, don’t you also have several names?”
Bobo laughed happily. His good habit of asking questions helped him learn a lot of new knowledge.
