imaginative stories about nature: The Eyes of the Trees
“There are many eyes in the forest: the red eyes of the rabbits peeking out from the grass, the quick, darting eyes of the squirrels, the big eyes of the owls that open one eye while closing the other, the black eyes of the wild boars, which aren’t as sharp as their noses…
“But besides the animals’ eyes, there are other eyes too, like the twinkling stars in the night sky, the glistening dew on the grass, and the eyes that are always open on the trees…”
Recently, Bambi the deer had been feeling down, and his good friend, Black Bear, was always trying to cheer him up. So today, Black Bear told Bambi a story about the eyes in the forest.
“Wait a minute, did you just say something wrong?” Bambi exclaimed, “How can trees have eyes?”
“I wouldn’t lie to you, come with me,” Black Bear said with a smile. “I’ll take you to see them with your own eyes.”
After walking through a less dense forest, up a gentle slope, and past a thicket, Black Bear said to Bambi, “We’re almost there.”
Suddenly, Bambi stopped, so frightened he could barely speak. “Ah… this is too scary…”
Black Bear stopped too. He looked at Bambi, then looked ahead and couldn’t help but laugh. “Are you feeling uncomfortable being stared at by so many eyes all at once?”
Bambi immediately understood and stammered, “You mean… these are the eyes of the trees?”
“Yes, this is a birch forest. Each tree has several pairs of eyes on it,” Black Bear said, still laughing, as he urged Bambi to come closer. Bambi only dared to walk behind Black Bear.
Indeed, on every birch tree, there were many pairs of eyes.
“Are these trees, these eyes, watching everything that happens?” Bambi tilted his head and asked Black Bear.
Black Bear paused, then said, “Maybe they are.”
Bambi asked again, “Whether it’s something bad or something good, they see it all, right?”
“Maybe… probably… I think you’re right,” Black Bear said, surprised that Bambi was taking this so seriously when he had only intended to cheer him up.
“That’s great! That means there will be fewer people doing bad things,” Bambi finally smiled, and Black Bear sighed in relief.
On the way back, Bambi asked a lot of questions.
Could he touch those eyes? Black Bear nodded.
Would those eyes cry? Black Bear shook his head.
Do those eyes stay open at night? Black Bear shook his head, then nodded, finally admitting, “Honestly, I’ve never come to see them at night, so who knows.”
That night, Bambi sneaked into the birch forest. He wanted to find out if those eyes stayed open at night.
Sure enough, those eyes were open, and Bambi could see them from far away.
“But if no one is here, would they still be open?” Bambi circled around a tree, then walked out and lay down in a bush.
He decided to pretend to be asleep and secretly watch those eyes. Several times, Bambi carefully lifted his head to peek and found that those eyes were still open.
“It must not be late enough; they’re still too scared to close their eyes,” Bambi muttered to himself.
Bambi continued to pretend to sleep and slowly fell into a real sleep until a noise woke him up. It was a pack of wild dogs!
Terrified, Bambi leaped up, startling the wild dogs who were foraging with their heads down. Bambi ran towards the birch forest, his legs trembling, his vision blurring. He could no longer distinguish between the eyes on the trees and the glowing eyes of the wild dogs. His foot caught on something, and he collapsed to the ground.
The wild dogs were getting closer, and Bambi closed his eyes tightly. Just then, a thunderous sound echoed through the air!
Bambi didn’t need to look to know who it was. He cried out in delight, “Black Bear, you’re here!”
The wild dogs had already started retreating before Black Bear could show his strength, and they ran away in a flash while Black Bear turned towards Bambi.
“How did you get here so fast?” Bambi got up and forced a smile, though it looked more like a grimace.
“There were eyes that saw you were in danger,” Black Bear said, brushing the dirt and leaves off Bambi, smiling as he pointed to the birch trees. “It was them.”
Bambi laughed, “Can those eyes really see everything that happens?”
“Of course!”
“Even the good things?” Bambi asked again.
Black Bear circled the tree, nodded, and said, “That’s right, like when you helped the pheasants build a nest; mixing mud and long blades of grass worked very well. You helped the rabbit retrieve its basket that had rolled down the hill…”
“That’s amazing!” Bambi jumped up, his legs now full of strength.
“Every eye sees everything that happens in the forest, the good deeds done in secret, and the misunderstood ones. The eyes of the trees know it all,” Black Bear said mysteriously on the way back.
Bambi couldn’t help but look back, “That’s wonderful!” Though he couldn’t sing out loud, his heart was soaring.
Black Bear also glanced back at those tree eyes, winking, “Yes, it’s wonderful!”
