Hedgehog Story: Little Hedgehog Curly
The hedgehog, with its sharp, spiky body, naturally has a lot of quills—exactly eight thousand of them, hard and pointy.
In the summer, the hedgehog named Spike liked to visit the little girl Xiaoya’s garden, because the garden was full of blooming roses, and Spike loved the scent of roses.
One day, Spike was in the garden and saw Xiaoya through the glass door. She was holding a curly-haired dog and playing happily.
Spike was so envious of that curly-haired dog. It had grown up without anyone ever touching it, let alone holding it.
Spike crawled towards the living room.
“Wow!” Xiaoya exclaimed in surprise when she saw Spike. “A little hedgehog!”
“Hello, little girl!” Spike really liked the little girl with the round face, curved eyes, upturned nose, and small mouth. “I… I…”
Xiaoya squatted down and asked Spike, “Little hedgehog, what do you want to say? Do you need my help?”
“I want you to hold me.”
“No!” Xiaoya jumped up, as if the quills on Spike’s back had already pricked her.
Spike felt very sad. “You don’t like me anymore?”
“No, no!” Xiaoya quickly waved her hands. “I like you, but you have quills, and I’m scared.”
Spike thought to himself, “So, she’s afraid of my quills.”
Spike crawled out and found a barbershop, where he had his quills permed into curls, just like the curly-haired dog.
After coming out of the barbershop, Spike’s quills were no longer sharp. He even changed his name to Curly and got a new ID card.
Curly the hedgehog returned to Xiaoya’s house.
“Little girl, I don’t have quills anymore. Can you hold me?”
“Ah—” Xiaoya screamed in fright when she saw the hedgehog covered in curls. “Where did this monster come from?”
“What? You don’t recognize me? I’m the hedgehog Spike who visited your house earlier. Now, my name is Curly.”
“No! You’re not a hedgehog. Go away! Go away!”
Curly the hedgehog felt deeply hurt.
Curly, disappointed, returned to his orchard.
Autumn came, and the ripe fruits fell to the ground with a thud. Other hedgehogs collected the fruits by sticking them onto their sharp quills. But Curly couldn’t collect the fruits because his quills had been permed into curls. His stomach growled, and little Curly wanted to eat some fruit, but he couldn’t gather any food, so he started to cry.
At that moment, Xiaoya, who was picking fruit, brought her basket full of fruit to the little hedgehog. The little hedgehog smiled happily, as if Xiaoya had already hugged and kissed him.
Yes, having sharp quills is what makes a hedgehog special. Little one, don’t change yourself so easily.
