Heartfelt love
Since childhood, he was always following her around. They lived in the same neighborhood, both on the third floor. She could even see what was playing on his TV from her balcony. So, she would laugh and say, “You’ll never escape from my grasp in this lifetime.”
When it came time to apply for college, she grabbed his application form. Two application forms, the same school. After filling them out, she stared at him blankly, making him feel very embarrassed, especially since there were so many people around.
It was she who confessed her love to him first. She said, “All these years, you have always occupied my heart, but now I understand very well that you are too outstanding, too handsome. I’m afraid that one day, in the blink of an eye, I will lose you, because I can’t live without you.” He didn’t say anything; he just walked over and held her hand.
She asked him, “Do you love me?” He smiled but didn’t answer. She asked again, and he still didn’t answer. He placed his hand on her leg—she had rheumatism, and every night he would massage her legs with his strong and full hands.
Not long after, they got married, and she settled into the role of a full-time housewife. Through his own efforts, he rose to the position of section chief. As his career soared, her joy dwindled. She asked him, “Do you love me?” He continued to smile without answering.
Some people started telling her that they had seen her husband somewhere or seen him walking intimately with another woman on the street. The reports were so convincing that she couldn’t help but believe them.
She thought about catching him in the act. One afternoon, amid all the rumors, she took a taxi to the hotel. He was intently looking at his laptop, saying he had just attended a meeting and was preparing materials for an evening speech. Seeing her disheveled appearance, he looked surprised, “What are you doing here?” She tried to hide her embarrassment and said, “I just had tea with a classmate and was passing by, so I came over.” Holding her slightly cold hand, he said, “It’s cold, wear more clothes.”
For many years afterward, she continued this game of chasing, but each time, she came up empty-handed. He never got angry, only gently advised her to take care of her health. The more nonchalant he was, the more she suspected something was wrong. Over the years, she developed a heart condition.
When she went to the hospital for checkups, she couldn’t talk about it. He had become one of the most prominent figures in the city, recognized as a good husband and a good son. She wouldn’t ruin his reputation over something she had no evidence for.
