goose and frog Story: Little Ears and Little Mouths
A pure white goose was by the crystal-clear brook, washing her pair of orange-yellow feet.
“Plop!” A small pebble suddenly flew from somewhere, splashing water all over the goose’s head and face. She shook herself vigorously, and upon looking around, she realized it was the mischievous little frog.
“Hello, Sister Goose! I wanted to give you a little scare!”
“I live in the water every day, so why would I be afraid of water?…” Sister Goose began to reply, but she stopped halfway. She was staring intently at the small pebble the little frog had thrown into the brook. “What’s so fascinating about a pebble?” The little frog was puzzled. He jumped onto a small lily pad and started to look as well.
Wow, what a beautiful little pebble! It was bright green, resembling a human ear, long and curved, with pale yellow lines circling around it, just like the folds of an ear.
The goose picked up the little pebble, “Thank you, Little Frog, you’ve given me such a beautiful little pebble. I’m going to keep this green little ear. When I feel like singing, I’ll place it beside me and feel as if someone is listening to my songs…”
The frog laughed, “When I picked it up by the roadside earlier, it was dull and gray, so ugly. How did it become so beautiful once it hit the water? Sister Goose, I really envy you for having this little pebble!”
Hearing this, the goose waddled onto the shore, picked up a handful of pebbles by the roadside, and with a “splash,” threw them all into the brook.
How magical! The pebbles in the clear water turned into a cluster of red, orange, yellow, and white colors—so translucent and beautiful. The goose stared at them for a long time, then picked up an orange-red pebble and handed it to the little frog. “Little Brother Frog, look, what does this one resemble?”
“Ah, a beautiful, delicate little mouth, with an upper lip, a lower lip, and a milky white line in the middle.” The little frog was mesmerized.
“This is for you,” said the happy goose.
“Thank you, Sister Goose. After autumn, I’ll be hibernating. I’ll definitely keep it with me, and this little mouth will tell me fairy tales all winter long. I won’t feel lonely anymore.”
