Goodnight, My Little Star
King Lion gathered all the animals in the forest together. King Lion said, “Today, I’m going to share the stars in the sky with everyone.” Every animal exclaimed eagerly, “That’s wonderful!”, “Amazing!”, “Long live the King!”
King Lion said, “When sharing the stars, there should be an order. Of course, I’ll go first, then Tiger, Black Bear, Leopard, Wolf, Fox, and Deer… Alright, let’s begin!”
At this moment, a timid voice spoke up, “Um… where am I in the order?”
It turned out to be a little mouse speaking. Everyone looked down on him.
King Lion glanced at the little mouse contemptuously and said, “You’re last, and the leftover star that nobody wants will be yours, haha!”
With that, King Lion picked the biggest and brightest star for himself: “This biggest and brightest star is mine!”
Next, Tiger picked the second brightest star, Black Bear picked the third brightest, Leopard picked the fourth… “This one is mine!”, “I want this one!”, “This one belongs to me!”
And the little mouse kept anxiously waiting on the side.
After everyone had picked, there was only one dim, small star left, and it was on the very edge.
“Ah, that’s my star! Hello, I’m the little mouse.” The little mouse happily greeted the small star.
And so, the little mouse also had a star of his own.
King Lion said everyone could only look at their own star now. The little mouse was honest, and truly only looked at his own star, never stealing glances at others’.
Actually, the little mouse didn’t even want to look at other stars, because he was starting to love his own star more and more. Leaning against the window, watching his star, was like listening to beautiful music.
When the little mouse went to bed, he always said to his little star, “Goodnight, my little star.”
Every day, as he watched, the little mouse felt his star getting brighter and brighter. He thought, “I’m so happy, my star is getting brighter and brighter! Maybe I should celebrate by eating an extra piece of sweet potato today.”
But one night, the little mouse suddenly noticed his star flickering, sometimes bright, sometimes dim, flashing intensely.
“Oh no, is my star sick?” The little mouse became very worried.
The little mouse went to find King Lion. “King Lion, my star seems to be sick!”
“What? Your star?” King Lion was puzzled.
“Yes, the one you gave me…”
King Lion scratched his head. “Ah, I remember now, something like that happened. How can you still remember? Forget about your sick star. Now, you have all the stars in the sky, alright?”
“No, I don’t want them!” The little mouse said firmly.
Disappointed, the little mouse walked away, feeling very sad.
“That’s well said, how could one just forget about it?”
The night was already very deep, but the little mouse still leaned against the window, watching the stars. The star became dimmer and dimmer. Suddenly, it turned into a shooting star, drawing a bright white line in the sky and falling down!
The star turned into a black stone and fell in front of the little mouse’s window.
The little mouse cried, “My star is dead, my star is dead…”
He carried the black stone back home, crying, and gave it a bath.
After washing it, the little mouse wiped it with a clean cloth, trying to make it shine, but it didn’t light up.
“Maybe it will shine if I let it bask in the sun?” The next morning, the little mouse took the black stone to bask in the sun.
The bright and warm sunlight didn’t make it shine either.
At night, the little mouse let it bathe in the moonlight. The gentle and pure moonlight didn’t make it shine either.
A firefly flew over, its little green light shining brightly. The little mouse begged the firefly, “Firefly, my star won’t shine, please help me light it up!” The firefly said, “Alright, alright.”
“My power alone is too small, let me call my friends.” The firefly called hundreds of friends.
Everyone lay on the black stone together, using their little green lights to warm it up. Time passed minute by minute, and finally, the firefly managed to light up the black stone. It emitted sparkling green light, very beautiful.
It turned back into a star and leaped into the sky.
“It’s become a star again, it’s become a star again!” The fireflies cheered.
The star returned to its original position, still being the little mouse’s star. Now, it was no longer a dim and small star, but the brightest and biggest star in the sky.
The little mouse leaned against the window, quietly watching, and thought: My star is getting brighter and brighter, will King Lion take it back?
The little mouse felt a bit sleepy.
“Goodnight, my little star.”
