Fun kids’ stories

The Cloth Tiger sat on the kang in its owner’s home all day, listless and bored. Staying home all the time was so dull! One day, as the Cloth Tiger was feeling particularly restless, it heard the Paper Tiger in the wall painting sigh, “Ah! So boring!” Hearing this, the Cloth Tiger perked up, realizing it wasn’t the only one feeling bored. “Well then, let’s go out and have some fun together,” it suggested to the Paper Tiger.

The Paper Tiger hesitated, unsure whether to agree. “It sounds good, but—I’m afraid the owner will get angry if he finds out.” The Cloth Tiger was also a bit scared but stubbornly said, “What’s there to be afraid of? The owner comes and goes every day. We’re so well-behaved at home; we deserve to go out and have some fun!”

And so, the Cloth Tiger and the Paper Tiger secretly slipped out of the house and ventured into the outside world.

The outside world was indeed very fun. The Cloth Tiger leaped into the air, shouting, “I am the king of the mountains!”

The Paper Tiger joyfully ran alongside, “I am the king of the forest!”

They ran into the forest, scaring away deer, pheasants, and even wild boars.

The two tigers felt very proud; it seemed everyone was afraid of them! It looked like there was no reason to fear the owner either; they could scare him when they got home.

They played and played, having a great time along the way. The forest was so much more interesting than home! The Cloth Tiger, pulling the Paper Tiger along, suggested, “Why don’t we just stay here and not go back? We could be kings here; wouldn’t that be grand?”

The Paper Tiger was about to nod in agreement when a strong wind blew, causing it to stumble backward.

“What’s wrong?” the Cloth Tiger asked, turning around.

“Oh, such a strong wind! It’s terrifying!”

At that moment, a real striped tiger appeared before them. The Cloth Tiger’s legs trembled, and it instinctively retreated until it was next to the Paper Tiger. The two tigers huddled together, shivering.

The real tiger tilted its head and looked at them, growling, “Hey! I heard there are two who call themselves the king of the mountains and the king of the forest around here. Have you seen them?”

“No, we haven’t seen them, really haven’t, really haven’t…” The two tigers shook their heads like drumsticks.

The real tiger said, “Then I’ll go ahead and look for them. I want to see who’s really the king!” With that, it walked off angrily.

As soon as the real tiger turned its back, the Cloth Tiger and the Paper Tiger ran for their lives. They ran and ran, not daring to make a sound when they saw a deer, not daring to tease the pheasants, and slipping past wild boars without a word.

Out of breath, they finally made it back home to find the owner throwing a fit. “Who took my beloved Cloth Tiger and Paper Tiger?”

But as soon as the owner saw them return, he was so happy that his anger vanished.

Thus, the Cloth Tiger and the Paper Tiger returned to their places on the kang and the wall, feeling reassured. Now, they both thought that staying home was really nice.
