Frog Story: Frog Fred
There was a frog named Fred who sat on his mushroom every day. He was very bored with his surroundings and wanted a new home, but he couldn’t think of a place better than his mushroom.
One day, a turtle slowly passed by his mushroom. Fred thought it was a good opportunity for a tour, so he jumped onto the turtle’s back. The turtle carried him forward, and Fred saw many new things: a big tree, a red flower, and various animals.
Fred saw a squirrel returning to her home built in the branches of the big tree and thought, “The view there must be beautiful, but I bet climbing up and down every day would get boring eventually. A home in the tree is not suitable for me.”
Fred noticed an earthworm poking its head out of a small hole. The worm’s hole looked convenient; there was no need to climb to get to the entrance. “But that kind of hole isn’t suitable for me to live in,” Fred pondered, “My body is too big, I’m afraid I can’t squeeze in.”
Fred looked around while on the turtle’s back and saw a group of rabbits playing near their burrow. “Rabbit burrows are big and easy to enter and exit,” Fred observed, “But I don’t want to live with others.” So, the rabbit burrow was not the place Fred wanted either.
Later, the turtle arrived at the edge of a large pond, with many lily pads floating in the middle. “That would make a wonderful home,” Fred thought, “As long as I can jump onto it.” Fred saw a large, hungry fish swimming along the shore. “He might be very friendly,” Fred thought, “But when he’s hungry, he might want to eat frog legs!”
The turtle started walking towards the pond, so Fred jumped off its back. He looked around the pond, trying to figure out how to jump onto those lily pads. At this moment, he noticed a snake sneaking towards an unprotected bird’s nest. There were several newly hatched chicks in the nest. “I want to save them,” Fred thought, “But how can I save them?”
Fred noticed a big, juicy peach hanging above the snake. “If I can climb up that peach tree,” Fred thought, “I can use that big peach to hit the snake.” Fred quickly jumped towards the peach tree and began to climb up. When he could reach the peach, the snake was right below it. Fred knocked the peach off the tree with force.
The weight of the peach had bent the branch it was on, so when Fred knocked it down, the branch sprang back, catapulting Fred into the middle of the pond.
In his haste, Fred looked back and saw the snake hastily retreating into the reeds. With a splash, Fred landed on a lily pad. “I’ll stay here,” Fred said, “This is a beautiful home.”
From then on, Frog Fred lived there happily ever after.
