Friendship Tales

A summer rain had just passed.

The sky cleared up.

Sunlight shone on every wet leaf in the forest, and sparkled in every little puddle left on the ground.

A little hedgehog was walking in the forest.

He was hopping and jumping between the puddles, finding it quite amusing.

The little hedgehog got tired of running and sat down to catch his breath under an old linden tree, looking down at the ground.

A cuckoo bird folded its wings and gently landed on a branch of the linden tree.

Without looking up, the little hedgehog said, “Hello, Mr. Cuckoo!”

The cuckoo bird was curious about how the little hedgehog could see it land on the tree while keeping his head down.

The little hedgehog said mysteriously, “Even though I have my head down, I know everything you do.”

The cuckoo bird didn’t believe him and stretched his neck.

“You’re stretching your neck!”

He lifted his leg.

“You’re lifting your leg!”

He pecked at his feathers.

“You’re grooming yourself!”

The little hedgehog never lifted his head.

The cuckoo bird thought the little hedgehog was magical and extraordinary, almost unbelievable. So he flew down to the base of the tree to ask the little hedgehog for guidance — and saw a golden puddle under the tree, like a mirror, reflecting his pair of wings and his graceful landing.

Looking again, the puddle also reflected every leaf and branch of the old linden tree, no wonder the little hedgehog could see his every move so clearly.

The cuckoo bird looked at the little hedgehog and smiled. The little hedgehog looked at the cuckoo bird and smiled too.

The puddle reflected two happy smiling faces.

The little hedgehog said, “Some things seem mysterious, but when you know the reason, they become quite ordinary. Don’t you think?”

“Yes, just like you and the puddle,” the cuckoo bird said happily, “Now, I can also know everything on the tree by keeping my head down.”

At that moment, the cuckoo bird saw in the puddle that another cuckoo bird was landing on a branch.
