Friendship Stories

Little Rabbit Long Ears built a small house on the prairie, a house with red tiles and green bricks.

Long Ears planted a tall paulownia tree in front of the small yard, a Boston ivy by the wall, fruit trees and a few watermelon vines around the yard. After some time, the paulownia tree grew dense leaves, and the Boston ivy climbed all over the green brick wall. The watermelons in the yard grew round and big.

One day, Little Fat Bear, a friend of Little Rabbit Long Ears, came to visit.

Sitting on a stone bench in the yard, Little Fat Bear said, “Little Rabbit, you live here all alone, without any friends. Don’t you feel lonely?”

“No,” Little Rabbit Long Ears smiled and said, “Who said I live here alone? My friends live here too. They help me and make my life very happy.”

“Where are your friends? I can’t see any of them,” Little Fat Bear said in surprise.

“I’ll let you meet my friends who you usually can’t see,” Little Rabbit waved towards the Boston ivy and said, “Friends, come out.”

From the thick leaves of the Boston ivy, a little gecko crawled out and said, “Hello, Mr. Fat Bear!”

Little Rabbit said, “Mr. Gecko is great. He helps me catch mosquitoes, flies, and gnats every day.”

Little Bear said happily, “No wonder there are no mosquitoes or flies bothering you here, making it clean and quiet.”

Little Rabbit waved towards the paulownia tree and said, “Come, friends!”

An owl flew down from the paulownia tree and said to Little Fat Bear, “Hello, Mr. Fat Bear!”

Little Rabbit said, “Miss Owl is an expert at catching mice. With her protection, I don’t worry about mice stealing things and spreading diseases.”

“Oh, mice are nasty little thieves. With her, you can sleep peacefully,” Little Fat Bear said enviously.

Little Rabbit waved towards the ground where the watermelons grew and said, “Come, friends!” A few earthworms crawled out of the ground and said, “Hello, Mr. Fat Bear!”

Little Rabbit said, “The Earthworm Brothers help me turn the soil and loosen it, that’s why my watermelons grow so big.”

Little Rabbit waved towards the outside of the wall and said, “Come, friends!”

At this time, a group of bees flew in from outside the wall. Little Rabbit said, “The bees help pollinate my fruit trees, so they can bear big and sweet fruits.”

Little Fat Bear said, “You are so lucky to have so many friends. I think there must be many friends around my house too, I should go thank them.”

“That’s right,” Little Rabbit Long Ears said, “We should really thank these invisible friends!” Little Rabbit brought out a lot of fruits and cut open a watermelon to entertain his friends. Everyone ate happily.
