Fox and deer story: The Truth of Getting Up Early
The fox and the sika deer were neighbors but didn’t interact much. The fox, often taking advantage of others, was afraid of retaliation and rarely went out during the day. The sika deer got up at 7 a.m. every day to make breakfast for her children. Once they were full, they went off to school, and she went to work in the orchard.
Recently, the sika deer had been getting up before dawn, rushing out, and returning promptly at 7:30 a.m. to take care of her children.
The fox found this suspicious. He firmly believed in the saying “No one gets up early without a profit.” The sika deer must have discovered something valuable. So, one day, he decided to follow her.
He saw the sika deer walking along a winding path into a cave. As expected, there must be some treasure hidden in the cave. The fox hid near the entrance, waiting for the sika deer to come out with the treasure.
After about an hour, the sika deer emerged with a bulging bag on her back. Once she was far away, the fox quickly dashed into the cave, ready to search for the treasure. However, the cave was not very deep, and inside lay a sick old bear.
According to the old bear, a fire had broken out in the forest, killing all his children. He escaped alone but unfortunately fell ill and took shelter in this cave. If it weren’t for the sika deer bringing him food and medicine and taking care of him diligently, he would have died long ago.
The fox asked the old bear, “What was in the bag that the sika deer was carrying?”
“Those were my dirty clothes. She took them home to wash and mend for me.”
The truth was revealed, and the fox blushed with shame.
