Fireflies and the Little Star
In the dark night, a little star blinked its eyes and emerged from the clouds. It twinkled, shining in the sky, unwilling to move even a bit.
A few fireflies fluttered their wings, flying back and forth. They played hide-and-seek among the leaves, danced in the grass, and frolicked by the river. But when they stopped and noticed the star motionless, they mocked, “Star! So you can’t move, huh? We’re all shining, but look at us, flying around so freely and gracefully.”
The star heard the fireflies’ taunts but remained still and didn’t get angry. It just smiled kindly and continued to stay in the sky.
Seeing that the star was easy to bully, the fireflies continued, “Why so serious? Are you afraid that if you move, you won’t be as beautiful and might even make people laugh?”
Still, the star stayed silent.
The fireflies found it boring and stopped mocking the star, going back to playing by the river.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed from afar, and the fireflies, frightened, hid behind the big tree, waiting for the person to pass. At that moment, one firefly suddenly exclaimed, “Look, the star moved! It drew a beautiful arc in the sky following the person’s footsteps. It’s stunning!”
All the fireflies saw this scene. After the person walked away, one firefly disdainfully said to the star, “So you were just trying to flatter humans, lighting their way.”
This time, the star didn’t stay silent. It said, “No, I wasn’t flattering anyone. I moved to light the way for humans, not for any other reason. Simply because I have light, and using what I have to help those in need is my wish.”
Hearing this, the fireflies lowered their heads in shame. Despite having light themselves, they realized they had been selfish.
