Falling in Love with Your Snores
Xiaoman was newly married and constantly sleepy. Her girlfriend teased her, saying, “Working overtime every night? Don’t overexert yourself.” After saying this, she had a mischievous smile on her face.
Xiaoman blushed and playfully swung her fists at her friend, who quickly dodged. Left with no choice, Xiaoman went home and complained to her husband, “It’s all your fault. Your loud snoring keeps me awake at night.”
Her husband didn’t believe his snoring could prevent Xiaoman from sleeping. That night, Xiaoman pressed the record button. The next morning, she woke her husband up. Startled by his own snoring, which sometimes sounded like an old ox gasping and other times like rolling thunder, he was amazed.
Just as it would quiet down, it would suddenly roar like a plane taking off. He had never realized his snoring was so dramatic. He tenderly hugged Xiaoman and said, “From now on, I’ll wait until you fall asleep before I do.”
Though easy to say, it was hard to do. Her husband was the kind who would start snoring the moment his head hit the pillow. Xiaoman couldn’t bear it, but no matter what, he refused to sleep first. When he couldn’t hold on anymore, he would splash his face with cold water to stay awake. Xiaoman was touched, often pretending to sleep. Over time, she got used to it, managing to sleep intermittently and gradually restoring the rosy color to her cheeks.
Her husband, however, grew thinner. Xiaoman said, “You can sleep now. I’ve really gotten used to it.” But he wouldn’t agree. Xiaoman was so anxious that she cried. She sought help from her friend, who gave her a solution. That day, Xiaoman brought home a medicinal pillow, prominently labeled “Specifically for Snoring.”
Her husband started using the pillow, and Xiaoman reported the results daily. Her husband was skeptical. After a few days, Xiaoman excitedly said, “Hey, you actually stopped snoring.” Then, adopting a falsely modest demeanor, she sighed deeply, “Sigh, I’ve gotten so used to your snoring that now I can’t quite fall asleep without it.”
From then on, her husband slept peacefully and snored freely, still as thunderous as ever. By this time, Xiaoman could sleep easily amidst his snoring and wake up just as comfortably.
Her husband’s spirits improved, and he gained weight. By the end of the year, he was even recognized as an exemplary employee at work, soon to go on a company trip to Huangshan.
Over the years, this was his first trip away from home. Xiaoman sent him off with reluctance, then went home and stared blankly at the medicinal pillow. Ten days later, her husband returned from Huangshan late at night. Not wanting to disturb Xiaoman’s sleep, he quietly inserted his key into the lock and gently opened the door.
To his surprise, he heard a man’s thunderous snoring from the bedroom. He was about to get angry at his wife when he saw Xiaoman sound asleep, with a tape recorder playing the familiar sounds of his snoring—sometimes like an old ox gasping, sometimes like rolling thunder. He sat quietly by Xiaoman’s side. She woke up and shyly smiled, “Without your snores, I can’t sleep.”
