Fairy Tales about Cat: The Remarkable Cat
Jixiang had gone out to sea to fish, leaving his wife alone by the shore, mending the nets. The only sound accompanying her was the waves crashing against the beach. She looked up at the glaring sun; there was still quite some time before noon.
“Madam, my leg is injured. Could you help me?” A weak cat, suppressing its pain, calmly requested.
Suddenly, a talking cat appeared before her, which greatly startled Mrs. Jixiang.
“Of course!” Mrs. Jixiang quickly took the cat home. She opened the medicine box, took out plaster and bandages, and carefully dressed the cat’s wound.
“Are you an enchanted spirit? How can you speak human language?” Mrs. Jixiang asked. “No, Madam. I damaged twenty dictionaries just to learn human speech,” the cat replied earnestly.
Mrs. Jixiang laughed.
“How about fresh fish for lunch?” Everyone knows that’s a cat’s favorite food. “That sounds wonderful, thank you!” The cat answered happily.
During the meal, the cat couldn’t stop praising Mrs. Jixiang’s cooking.
“Ah, I’m so full!” The cat patted its belly. “Now, I must start practicing martial arts!” “Practicing martial arts?” Mrs. Jixiang asked curiously. “Yes. I injured my leg while practicing martial arts. But I won’t give up—I must become a cat skilled in magical martial arts! Meow—” the cat declared passionately. “That’s truly remarkable!” Mrs. Jixiang complimented.
Days passed without notice, and over ten days had gone by, but Jixiang hadn’t returned. Mrs. Jixiang grew increasingly restless. She put down her shuttle and ran to the shore to look out to sea. Huge waves crashed against the rocks, creating a mist that obscured her view. In the evening, she returned home disheartened, unable to cheer up no matter how many jokes the cat told.
What to do now? The cat drooped its head, equally at a loss.
Mrs. Jixiang stopped mending the nets. Every day before dawn, she would run to the shore, stand on the highest rock, and anxiously scan the vast sea until dark before returning home. “Could something have happened to my husband?” Mrs. Jixiang cried out in worry. “Don’t worry, perhaps he’s delayed because he caught a big fish,” the cat, with a throat made hoarse by dried fish, comforted her.
Since Mrs. Jixiang went to the shore early and returned late every day, she no longer had the time or mood to prepare delicious meals for the cat. The cat had to rummage through the kitchen for some dried fish, but without nutritious food, its leg grew more severely crippled.
At dawn, Mrs. Jixiang headed to the shore again. This time, she encountered a seductive woman: “Are you waiting for your husband?” the woman asked. Mrs. Jixiang quickly nodded. “I can bring your husband back safely, but you must agree to one thing!” “What is it?” Mrs. Jixiang’s eyes lit up. “Kill that cat you keep!” the woman said, her face twisted with malice. “What?!” “Do as I say, or you’ll never see your husband again!” After speaking, the woman vanished.
Sobbing all the way, Mrs. Jixiang returned home. The cat was flipping through a small booklet, “Madam, you’ve been bewitched by the sea demon, and now you want to kill me, right?” the cat asked directly. “Yes, she said that only by killing you can my husband return safely! Waaa—” Mrs. Jixiang burst into tears.
“Don’t be afraid! In the fourth section of the seventh chapter of this ‘Essentials of Cat Martial Arts,’ it clearly describes how to defeat a demon. I think I’ve learned enough. Tomorrow, let me subdue her.” Despite its injured leg, the cat was confident in defeating the sea demon. Mrs. Jixiang dried her tears and followed the cat’s advice.
The next morning, Mrs. Jixiang set out with the cat on her back. The woman was already waiting. “If you dare defy me, I’ll kill you!” the woman roared as she lunged at Mrs. Jixiang. “How despicable!” The cat suddenly extended its sharp claws and slashed the woman’s nose hard. Instantly, a brown liquid oozed out. The woman quickly covered her face with her hands. In a flash, her face and hands melted like ice cream. The woman fled toward the sea, but after only a few steps, she collapsed on the beach, transformed into a large crab, and hid behind the rocks.
The sea gradually calmed down, and Mrs. Jixiang saw her husband’s boat heading towards the shore.
