Fable for kids: The Little Wooden Monkey and His Shadow
A little wooden monkey, very cute in appearance, was liked by everyone who saw him. They would all praise him, saying, “This little wooden monkey is so adorable!” After hearing so many compliments, the little wooden monkey became quite proud.
One day, the little wooden monkey heard people praising him again and happily started doing somersaults on the ground. But then he noticed his shadow: when he took a step forward, the shadow followed; when he struck a pose, the shadow imitated him exactly.
The little wooden monkey became annoyed and angrily asked, “Shadow, why do you keep following me?”
The shadow replied, “I am a part of you. How could I leave you?”
“So, when people praise me, you get to share in the glory?” the little wooden monkey asked, unhappy.
The shadow said, “We are one entity. I can’t leave you, and you can’t leave me!”
Furious, the little wooden monkey shouted, “Nonsense! Who needs you? Why should you share my glory? Go away, I never want to see you again!”
“You’ll regret it if you drive me away,” the shadow said calmly.
The little wooden monkey was so angry that he picked up a small stone and threw it at the shadow. “If you don’t leave, I’ll throw another!”
Afraid of being hit, the shadow quickly left the little wooden monkey, disappearing somewhere.
The little wooden monkey couldn’t see his shadow anymore and was overjoyed. He jumped and shouted, “Oh, I’ve chased the shadow away! All the glory is mine now, with no shadow to share it!”
But soon, the little wooden monkey noticed something was wrong: his life was without sunlight. The porcelain doll, the clay dog, and the little cloth bear all played happily in the sunshine, but when he went out, the sunlight vanished without a trace.
People no longer liked the little wooden monkey and began to see him as a monster. His friends were afraid of him, saying he was a demon who could swallow the sunlight, and they stopped playing with him.
The little wooden monkey was very sad and went to the wise rubber cow to cry and complain, “What did I do wrong? Why is everyone treating me like this?”
The rubber cow, in a heartfelt tone, told the little wooden monkey, “You and your shadow are one. All the glory was yours together. But you wanted to keep all the glory for yourself. How could the sunlight like a child like you? Who would dare to be with you?”
The little wooden monkey, feeling ashamed, asked, “I understand now. What should I do from now on?”
The rubber cow said, “If you admit your mistake and correct it, you’ll still be a good child, and everyone will forgive you! Look, who’s coming?”
The little wooden monkey turned around and was surprised to see his shadow following him again. At that moment, the warm sunlight was shining on him!
