Endless Love: A Collection of Bedtime Love Stories
There is a saying: “Original parts have fewer faults, but midway couples have more troubles.” This perfectly describes the situation between Jiangang and Yuelian.
Their relationship was actually quite good, but when they got married, each brought a child with them. Jiangang had a son named Congcong, and Yuelian had a son named Kangkang. Both little rascals were four years old, just a few months apart.
Jiangang was a freight driver, often away on long-haul trips. Yuelian managed the two little troublemakers alone at home, constantly juggling between them, and her temper began to fray. Sometimes, when she got really angry, she would give the kids a few smacks. Although she didn’t show favoritism towards Kangkang, Jiangang would see the palm prints on Congcong’s butt when he returned home and, while he said nothing, he held a grudge in his heart. Over time, this led to quarrels between the couple.
The two little guys didn’t care about their parents’ arguments; they continued to play happily. One day, Kangkang kicked over the blocks Congcong had painstakingly built, causing Congcong to run crying to Jiangang. Having just had an argument with Yuelian, Jiangang was still angry and said, “From now on, we won’t care about him. You just play with Dad.”
Yuelian was upset upon hearing this: “Is this how a family should talk?” She pulled Kangkang into the bedroom and slammed the door shut. From that moment, Jiangang and Yuelian stopped speaking to each other, sleeping in separate rooms with their respective sons.
The cold war continued for a long time. Jiangang had already calmed down and wanted to talk to Yuelian, but she, appearing calm on the surface, didn’t give him the opportunity.
One day, as Jiangang was about to head out with Congcong, Yuelian suddenly called him from the doorway, saying, “Come in, I have something to tell you.”
Jiangang left Congcong outside and Yuelian sent Kangkang out too. They closed the door behind them, and Yuelian began to cry, saying, “Jiangang, you are a good person, but with these two young children, it’s hard for us as step-parents.”
Hearing this, Jiangang knew what Yuelian was about to say. Despite his anger, he still felt a deep sympathy for her. He replied, “Midway couples are bound to have bumps and bruises. Over time, as the kids grow up, things will get better.”
Yuelian shook her head and said, “Both children are spoiled, neither willing to yield. If this continues, the friction will only increase, and tensions will rise. I married you for nothing but to live a harmonious life, but how can we call this living? It would be better-“
Jiangang, anxious, started pulling his hair and said, “It’s my fault for always being on the road and not being able to take care of the family. How about I sell the truck and stay home to help manage the kids?”
Yuelian replied, “If you sell the truck, what will you do? Besides, neither of these kids is easy to manage. Do you think you can handle it better if you stay home? It might only make things worse.”
As they were talking, the noise outside suddenly erupted again. Kangkang and Congcong were crying loudly in the living room. Opening the door, Jiangang and Yuelian were stunned: Kangkang and Congcong were hugging each other tightly, naked and crying hysterically.
They rushed to them, asking, “What happened? What’s going on?”
Neither child said a word, just pointed to their stomachs while crying. Jiangang looked and was shocked: their bellies were stuck together tightly. Jiangang tried to separate them, but any movement made them cry out in pain, and their bellies remained firmly glued together.
It turned out that the two kids had missed each other after not playing together for days. Once left in the living room, they were thrilled to play together again. They turned on the TV and saw a news story about conjoined twins, who were joined at the stomach, lying face-to-face, laughing and kicking their legs. Inspired, they found a rope to tie themselves together and lay on the couch, imitating the twins, laughing heartily.
Soon, the rope came loose. Kangkang then remembered the strong glue in the utility room, thinking it would be more effective. He got the glue, they took off their clothes, and smeared it on their stomachs, hugging tightly. Soon, their bellies were indeed stuck together. Initially, they found it fun, but after a while, they got tired and wanted to separate. They tried pushing each other apart, but it hurt and they couldn’t separate, which scared them into crying.
Jiangang, sweating with anxiety, ran around the house looking for solutions, but every item he considered—a toothbrush, a chopstick, a fruit knife—seemed inappropriate. Seeing the kids crying in pain, he slapped himself in frustration: “What kind of situation is this?”
Yuelian, equally anxious and upset, started crying too. Amazingly, the kids stopped crying when they saw their parents’ distress. Kangkang said, “Dad, Mom, don’t be sad. If we can’t be separated, we’ll eat, sleep, walk, bathe, and go to the toilet together. When we need to pee, I’ll let little brother go first, then I’ll go.”
Congcong added, “We’ll be together every day and promise not to fight or argue.”
Jiangang hugged both kids, kissing them repeatedly, tears streaming down his face.
The neighbors, hearing the commotion, helped take Kangkang and Congcong to the hospital, where they successfully underwent surgery to separate them. In the hospital room, Yuelian took care of both boys, running back and forth between their beds, busy but smiling happily.
When Jiangang returned from a trip, he would cook at home and bring the food to the hospital, feeding both boys. Once, absentmindedly, he brought the spoon to Yuelian’s mouth. She smiled, playfully slapped his hand, then blushed and opened her mouth to eat the offered food.
