Emotional story of an elderly couple

Don’t fall in love just because you’re lonely. Time is a devil; as days go by, if you’re an affectionate person, even if you don’t love the other person, you’ll eventually develop feelings. What will you do then?

There was an elderly couple, both over sixty years old, with good financial conditions. It was supposed to be a time for them to enjoy retirement and their golden years, yet they came to our law firm together to request a divorce.

The old lady said that after marrying him, their relationship was very good initially. However, later on, they kept arguing and always had disagreements. Their personalities became completely incompatible, creating significant disharmony. If it weren’t for the sake of their children, they would have parted ways long ago. They had finally waited for their children to establish their own families and have their own kids, freeing them from worries. Now, they decided to divorce to allow each other a free and peaceful old age, without enduring any more pointless arguments.

At that moment, despite my lengthy persuasion, the old lady remained firmly determined to get a divorce. Helplessly, I could only help them with the divorce agreement and other procedures. The old man was very polite and said I had worked hard, so to show his gratitude, he suggested that the three of us have a meal together after finishing the paperwork. I immediately agreed because I was indeed hungry. The old lady also thought about it and said that although they were divorced, they didn’t have any deep hatred for each other, so having a meal together was still possible.

However, in the restaurant, I felt the atmosphere was very awkward because no one spoke while waiting for the food. Later, when the waiter brought a dish of “Mao’s Braised Pork,” the old man quickly picked up a piece and placed it on the old lady’s plate, saying, “Eat, this is your specialty dish.”

Seeing this scene, my eyes lit up, thinking there might still be a chance for reconciliation! Unexpectedly, the old lady, with teary eyes, said, “We’ve been together for most of our lives, which wasn’t easy. If you talk about feelings, there are definitely some. But you are always so self-righteous, making decisions without considering others’ feelings. Take this braised pork, for example. Although it’s my best dish, don’t you know I actually hate eating it?”

At this moment, the old man, choking up a bit, said, “Your personality is too strong, and you never understood my love for you. Throughout my life, I always thought about how to please you. Do you know? I don’t really like eating braised pork, but since we got married, you said it’s your specialty dish, so every time you made it, I pretended to love it.”

Seeing this, my nose suddenly felt sour. They actually deeply loved each other but were facing separation due to a lack of communication.

After the meal, I remained unsettled for a long time.

Later, I learned that that night, the once-married couple felt endless emotions. After more than thirty years of marriage, parting was always cruel. The old man tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep, as the burning pain in his heart tormented him mercilessly.

He thought for a long time, enduring the pain to call the old lady, wanting to express his regret. He wanted to tell her how much he loved her.

The phone rang. The old lady saw the caller ID and knew it was the old man calling. But at that moment, her heart was filled with resentment. She thought the old man had let her down for a lifetime and didn’t want to hear his voice anymore.

The phone rang for a long time, but the old lady didn’t answer, thinking they were already divorced, so why contact each other? People should at least maintain some dignity. So, she didn’t answer, no matter how long it rang. Later, she simply unplugged the phone. The old man held the cold receiver, unable to hear the old lady’s voice, his heart feeling like it was being cut with a knife. He couldn’t find peace for a long time.

Actually, that night, the old lady also tossed and turned, unable to sleep due to sadness. She just forgot that the old man had a heart condition. The next day, the old man was found dead in his living room, still clutching the phone.

The old lady couldn’t believe it when she heard the news. To vent her anger, she let the man she had always loved die in heartbreak. But no matter how loudly she cried now, she couldn’t bring back his smile.

The old lady, heartbroken, organized the old man’s belongings and suddenly found an insurance policy in the bookshelf. The policy was dated on their tenth wedding anniversary, and the beneficiary was, of course, the old lady.

The policy amount was as high as one million yuan! Upon further inspection, she found a note tucked in the policy: “Dear, by the time you find this policy, I may no longer be in this world, but my love for you will never change. My responsibility to take care of you will never end. This insurance money will continue to give you meticulous love and care on my behalf, as if I were still by your side. I will always love you!” Upon reading this, the old lady burst into tears…
