Emotional story of an elderly couple
Don’t fall in love just because you’re lonely. Time is a devil; as days go by, if you’re an affectionate person, even if you don’t love the other person, you’ll eventually develop feelings. What will you do then?
There was an elderly couple, both over sixty years old, with good financial conditions. It was supposed to be a time for them to enjoy retirement and their golden years, yet they came to our law firm together to request a divorce.
The old lady said that after marrying him, their relationship was very good initially. However, later on, they kept arguing and always had disagreements. Their personalities became completely incompatible, creating significant disharmony. If it weren’t for the sake of their children, they would have parted ways long ago. They had finally waited for their children to establish their own families and have their own kids, freeing them from worries. Now, they decided to divorce to allow each other a free and peaceful old age, without enduring any more pointless arguments.
At that moment, despite my lengthy persuasion, the old lady remained firmly determined to get a divorce. Helplessly, I could only help them with the divorce agreement and other procedures. The old man was very polite and said I had worked hard, so to show his gratitude, he suggested that the three of us have a meal together after finishing the paperwork. I immediately agreed because I was indeed hungry. The old lady also thought about it and said that although they were divorced, they didn’t have any deep hatred for each other, so having a meal together was still possible.
However, in the restaurant, I felt the atmosphere was very awkward because no one spoke while waiting for the food. Later, when the waiter brought a dish of “Mao’s Braised Pork,” the old man quickly picked up a piece and placed it on the old lady’s plate, saying, “Eat, this is your specialty dish.”
Seeing this scene, my eyes lit up, thinking there might still be a chance for reconciliation! He thought for a long time, enduring the pain to call the old lady, wanting to express his regret. He wanted to tell her how much he loved her.
The phone rang. The old lady saw the caller ID and knew it was the old man calling. But at that moment, her heart was filled with resentment. She thought the old man had let her down for a lifetime and didn’t want to hear his voice anymore.
The phone rang for a long time, but the old lady didn’t answer, thinking they were already divorced, so why contact each other? People should at least maintain some dignity. The old man held the cold receiver, unable to hear the old lady’s voice, his heart feeling like it was being cut with a knife. He couldn’t find peace for a long time.
