Elephant Stories: Little Elephant Transfers Schools
Little elephant Beto was attending the elephant school. One day, he ran home angrily, huffing through his long trunk, and said to his mom, “Elephant school is terrible! All they teach us is to move logs, and it tires us out completely. I want to go to a different school!”
Elephant mom sent Beto to cat school. The cat teacher taught Beto how to catch mice. The mice were jumping around Beto’s feet, and he clumsily tried to stomp on them but couldn’t catch any. He tried using his long trunk to grab them, but the mice would just jump onto his trunk and dance. One naughty little mouse even crawled into his nostril, causing him to sneeze several times to get it out.
Beto didn’t like cat school, so his mom sent him to monkey school.
The monkey teacher taught Beto how to climb trees, but Beto’s body was too heavy. As soon as he tried to cling to the tree trunk, he would slide right back down and couldn’t climb up.
Beto told his mom, “Monkey school is boring! Roosters crow so beautifully, I want to go to chicken school!”
The rooster teacher taught Beto how to crow. Beto stretched his short neck and strained his voice to try to call “Cock-a-doodle-doo!” but all that came out was a coarse “Ooo-ooo.”
Beto changed his mind again and said, “Horses run so gracefully! I want to go to horse school!”
The horse teacher taught Beto how to run and said, “When you run, spread your hooves, run as lightly as clouds and as fast as the wind.”
Beto started running, “Thud! Thud! Thud!” His heavy feet pounded the ground like drums. He was exhausted after a short while, panting heavily.
Beto sheepishly told his mom, “No matter what I learn, it’s not easy. I should go back to elephant school!”
This time, Beto studied log-moving seriously and finally learned how to do it. He used his long trunk to wrap around a tree trunk, gave a strong pull, and down came the tree! Then, he stacked the logs together and used his trunk to carry them out of the forest.
Everyone said, “Beto is doing a great job, he’s really a good student at the elephant school!”
Beto happily lifted his long trunk and squinted his eyes with a smile.
