Crocodiles Protect the Grass
A family of crocodiles lived in the river, and they had to eat a lot of fish every day. However, the number of fish in the river was decreasing.
“Mom, let’s go to a bigger river, or we will starve,” said a young crocodile.
“But we’ve lived here for many years, how can we bear to leave?” said another young crocodile.
“We’re not leaving!” The crocodile mother smiled and led the young crocodiles to the shore. “Let’s protect the grass here and let it grow more lush.”
“Oh my, are we going to start eating grass now?” cried a young crocodile.
“We don’t eat grass; we just help it grow better and then invite the hippo family to eat it,” said the mother.
“Mom, what’s wrong with you? We’re starving, and you’re thinking about others?” The young crocodile was very surprised.
Under the care of the crocodiles, the grass on the shore grew very well.
The crocodile mother invited the hippo family, and when the hippos were hungry, they came ashore to eat grass. After they were full, they swam in the water and lived happily.
“Mom, aren’t you thinking about us anymore?” The young crocodiles couldn’t understand why their mother was so kind to the hippo family while letting their own family go hungry. The crocodile brother prepared to take his younger siblings away from their mother.
At that moment, a miracle happened. Schools of fish swam over. The young crocodiles were very happy and started eating to their hearts’ content.
After they were full, the young crocodiles asked their mother, “Where did all these fish come from?”
“It was the hippo’s droppings that attracted the fish,” the mother said earnestly. “Helping others is also helping ourselves.”
After hearing their mother’s words, the young crocodiles lowered their heads in shame.
From then on, the crocodiles and hippos lived together in the river, as close as one family.
