Children’s story about sharing
Once upon a time, there was a lazy big bear who occupied a large piece of farmland but was unwilling to cultivate it, spending his days sleeping.
Not far from the bear’s home lived a family of rabbits. Although the rabbits were very hardworking, they had no land and lived a life of poverty.
One day, the mother rabbit said to the father rabbit, “We need to come up with a plan.” So, they went to see the bear.
The father rabbit said to the bear, “Bear, we can’t go on like this. Could you give us some land to farm?”
The bear was sleeping. He opened one eye when he heard what the father rabbit said and asked, “Why should I give you any land?”
“Yes, you have a point,” said the father rabbit. “How about this: you provide the land, and I’ll provide the labor. I’ll do all the work in the fields, and after the harvest, we’ll split the crops equally based on the land area. Does that work for you?”
“Oh, let me think,” the bear said, half-believing.
“Yes, that’s right. I’ll work, you sleep, and we’ll share the harvest,” continued the father rabbit. “Do you want the top half or the bottom half?”
The bear stretched and said, “Alright, I’ll take the top half.”
The father rabbit smiled and said, “Bear, it’s a deal.”
So, while the bear slept, the rabbit family worked in the fields. The father rabbit sowed seeds, the mother rabbit watered the plants, and the little rabbits helped with weeding.
The crops grew day by day, and when harvest time came, the father rabbit and his family dug up radishes, sweet potatoes, potatoes, and peanuts. They piled up the crops that grew above ground and gave them to the bear, keeping the ones that grew underground for themselves.
The bear stared at his pile, his eyes wide open, and said, “Wait a minute, Rabbit, how come the best part is on your side?”
The father rabbit replied, “You chose the top half.”
The bear realized he had been outwitted and said, “Alright, you got me this time. But next season, I want the bottom half.”
The father rabbit smiled and said, “Alright, it’s a deal.”
So, while the bear slept, the rabbit family worked again. They sowed seeds, watered the plants, and weeded.
The crops grew day by day, and when harvest time came again, the father rabbit and his family harvested rice, wheat, lettuce, and cauliflower. They cut off the roots that grew underground and gave them to the bear, keeping the parts that grew above ground for themselves.
The bear frowned at his pile and said, “Rabbit, you tricked me again.”
The father rabbit said, “No, Bear, you chose the bottom half.”
The bear, furious, shouted, “Rabbit, farm again. Next season, I want both the top half and the bottom half.”
“Alright,” sighed the father rabbit. “Next harvest, the top and bottom halves will be yours. Bear, it’s a deal.”
So, while the bear slept, the rabbit family worked again. They sowed seeds, watered the plants, and weeded.
When the harvest season came, a large field of tall corn grew in front of the bear’s house. The father rabbit and his family pulled up the corn plants, removing the cobs in the middle and keeping them for themselves.
The bear rubbed his eyes, looked again and again, and couldn’t understand.
“Look, Bear, the top and bottom halves are yours, and I took the middle. Yes, Bear, that’s what we agreed on.”
At this point, the bear, exasperated, shouted, “I’ve had enough! I’ve been tricked again! Rabbit, from now on, I’ll farm myself. That way, the top, bottom, and middle will all be mine.”
The father rabbit said, “Yes, you should have done this earlier.”
So, the father rabbit left some seeds for the bear, and the bear gave some land to the rabbit.
From then on, the bear started working in the fields, not missing the planting and harvest seasons. Sometimes he harvested from underground, sometimes from above ground, and sometimes from the middle.
The father rabbit’s family also farmed their land, and they lived a happy life. They became good neighbors with the bear.
