Children’s story about courage
At the edge of the forest, there was a large lake. By the lake, there was a very tall tree, and on that tree lived a very bad crow. The crow was in cahoots with a wicked crocodile in the lake. Whenever someone came to swim in the lake, the crow would caw from the tree: “A piece of cake fell into the lake; it must taste really good…”
This was the secret signal between the crow and the crocodile. Upon hearing this call, the wicked crocodile would rush out, attack the swimmer, and eat them. The wicked crocodile would then spit out a few bones as payment for the crow.
One day, a chubby little pig came to the lake. Not knowing about the crocodile, he took off his clothes and jumped into the lake for a swim. The crow cawed from the tree, but the crocodile was dozing in the lake. The crow cawed several times, but the crocodile did not respond.
At this time, a little chubby hippo walked by the lake and, seeing the pig swimming, also jumped into the water. But before he could start swimming, his grandpa, Old Hippo, came running and quickly pulled him out, saying, “There is danger here!”
The little hippo was rushed home by his grandpa. Grandpa Hippo didn’t see the little pig in the lake. When he turned around, he saw clothes on the shore and thought they were left by the little hippo. He picked them up and took them home.
The chubby little pig was happily swimming when the wicked crow cawed again: “A piece of cake fell into the lake; if you don’t eat it, it will run away…”
The crocodile, having finished his nap, heard the crow’s strange call and saw the chubby little pig swimming. The crocodile swam toward him quickly.
At that moment, the chubby little pig, tired from swimming, reached the shore and was about to get out of the water. Seeing a crocodile chasing him, he rushed ashore. To his dismay, he found his clothes gone. Frightened and distressed, the little pig fled into the forest by the lake and started crying.
Four little frogs heard him and came over, asking why he was crying. The chubby little pig recounted his near escape from the wicked crocodile while swimming in the lake and how his clothes had disappeared from the shore, leaving him naked and unable to go home.
The four little frogs praised the little pig’s bravery and explained how the crocodile and the crow were in cahoots, causing trouble. The smallest frog said, “Ever since the wicked crocodile and the bad crow came here, we haven’t been able to swim in the lake. I almost forgot how to swim!”
The largest frog said, “Let’s help the little pig get home!”
The little pig said his house was not far away and asked the four little frogs to help him fetch his clothes from home. Soon, the four little frogs returned, saying they couldn’t find his clothes at his house, so they brought his bed sheet instead.
The chubby little pig remembered his clothes were drying in the bushes in front of his house and said, “That’s okay; a bed sheet will do!” He wrapped himself in the sheet. The smallest frog also brought a beautiful little basket from the pig’s house, thinking it was the little pig’s hat. The little frog placed the basket on the pig’s head.
The chubby little pig walked home, with the four little frogs following closely behind, holding the ends of the long sheet to keep it from dragging in the dirt.
At that moment, a mountain monster came to the lake to fish. Seeing the little pig walking by the lake, the monster mistook him for a king—a king of the lake—wearing a majestic cloak with four attendants following closely.
The mountain monster was astonished and respectfully said, “Honored King of the Lake, it is a great honor to meet you. If you have any commands, I am willing to follow them.”
The little pig adjusted the “crown” on his head and said in a deep voice, “Good luck to you. I will ensure you catch something good.”
The little pig looked up at the tree and said, “Mountain monster, use that crow on the tree as bait, and you will have a big catch. Take your good catch back to your mountain cave to enjoy slowly.”
“Yes, I am happy to obey!” The mountain monster leaped up and caught the wicked crow. He tied the crow to his fishing hook as bait and cast it into the lake.
At this moment, the four little frogs imitated the crow’s call in deep voices: “A piece of cake fell into the lake; it must taste really good…”
The wicked crocodile, upset about the little pig’s escape, heard the call and sprang out, biting the monster’s bait. His long snout was immediately hooked.
The mountain monster struggled to pull the crocodile ashore. He said to the little pig, “Thank you, King of the Lake, for your guidance. This thick-skinned strange fish will last me a long time!”
The mountain monster dragged the dripping crocodile away.
At that moment, Grandpa Hippo, holding the little pig’s clothes, returned to the lake with the little hippo. Grandpa Hippo said, “Little pig, I’m sorry. I accidentally took your clothes earlier. You shouldn’t swim here…”
“Feel free to swim! The wicked crocodile and the bad crow are finished!” The four little frogs recounted the recent events to Grandpa Hippo, and everyone was overjoyed.
“Splash, splash, splash…” The four little frogs, the chubby little pig, and the little hippo all jumped into the lake, creating waves of happy splashes…
Grandpa Hippo sat by the lake, watching their clothes. Seeing the six little friends happily splashing in the lake made him feel even happier than swimming himself.
