Children story about persistence: The Little Paper Man’s Wish

I Want to Fly

I am a little paper man.

I want to fly up into the sky and see the sun, the moon, and the stars. But my toy friends all think my idea is absolutely silly.

The little porcelain angel said, “Why do you want to fly? You might fall and get hurt.”

The little wax bird said, “I don’t want to fly. What’s so great about the sky? The sun would melt me!”

The roly-poly toy said, “Look, even the angel with wings doesn’t want to fly, so don’t have such crazy thoughts!”

“But I just want to fly,” I announced to everyone. “I will practice every day.” So every night, I spread my arms and jumped off the toy shelf.

On the first night, I landed headfirst on the floor. The cat curiously walked over and rubbed its paws on me.

On the second night, I fell into a coffee cup. Luckily, it was empty, or I would have turned into a mushy pulp.

On the third night, I fell into the wastebasket and almost got thrown out as garbage.

Every morning, the little owner found me missing from the toy shelf. He was never angry and would brush off the dust from me and smooth out my crumpled parts. I really wanted to tell him my secret, but toys can’t talk to humans.

I kept practicing flying every day, falling down again and again, but I wasn’t afraid. I just wanted to fly, fly, and fly.

This morning, the little owner found me under the desk. “I’ve figured it out! You want to fly!” he suddenly exclaimed and made me a pair of wings from white paper.

Look, I have wings! I was so happy I wanted to cry, laugh, and sing out loud.

The toy shelf is a happy home, but I love the blue sky, white clouds, sun, moon, and stars even more.

I said goodbye to my toy friends, and they said, “When you get tired of flying, you’re always welcome back home!”

I said goodbye to the little owner, and he said, “Congratulations on achieving your dream. Actually, I want to fly too!”

I will never forget the little owner. He truly is an amazing child—he figured out the wish of a little paper man.
