The toy soldier was dressed in a great camouflage uniform with a cool wooden gun tucked into his belt.
He used to be the boy’s good friend, but one day, the boy got a new toy and didn’t want him anymore.
The toy soldier was both angry and sad, so he had no choice but to go out and look for new friends.
He walked for a long, long time but still couldn’t find any new friends. Then, a strong gust of wind blew him into a big river.
The river was wonderful, much better than the boy’s house.
As the toy soldier swam in the water, he saw all kinds of fun fish and happily shouted, “Hey—Fish, fish, would you like to be my friend?”
But the fish all looked scared and swam away.
Suddenly, a sharp, long beak picked up the toy soldier and lifted him out of the river.
It turned out to be a white crane looking for food, and she mistook the toy soldier for a tasty fish and carried him into the sky.
“Let me go, let me go—” the toy soldier kicked and shouted, but the crane ignored him and kept flying higher.
The toy soldier was so anxious that he pulled out his wooden gun and aimed it at the crane’s head. “If you don’t let go, I’ll shoot!”
The crane was so frightened that she opened her beak wide.
But if she did that, wouldn’t the toy soldier fall? That would be a terrible fall! He quickly grabbed onto the crane’s neck and flipped himself onto her back. Now, he could see everything clearly.
The sky was so big, much bigger than the boy’s house.
The crane said angrily, “So you’re not a fish after all. Now my babies are going to go hungry, how disappointing!”
“Babies? You have babies? Well, I can play with your babies! I’m a toy soldier.”
The crane said, “That would be nice, but who plays with babies while carrying a gun?”
To make new friends, the toy soldier had to throw away his beloved wooden gun.
Soon, the toy soldier arrived at the crane’s home at the top of a big tree. The three little crane babies saw the toy soldier and chirped excitedly to welcome him. The toy soldier was thrilled—he never imagined he’d find three new friends all at once! He was no longer angry or sad.
