Bunny Stories: The Bunny with the Bow

1

The bunny, Jibu, had recently made a new friend named Miyan, a very fashion-conscious little mouse. Every day, Miyan not only made sure her fur was glossy and radiant but also liked to tie a beautiful purple bow on her long tail. The only flaw was that Miyan had only three legs.

Spring had arrived, the sun was bright, the breeze warm, and the earth was covered in a lush green, like a giant green velvet blanket. The small river outside the village was also gradually becoming more abundant.

One day, Jibu and Miyan decided to take a boat and drift downstream along the river to see the scenery in the distance.

“Mom, look! There’s a beautiful little boat made from a gourd by the shore. Is Daddy back?” A girl’s joyful voice suddenly rang out from the shore.

This was a little girl of about eight or nine years old, sitting in a wheelchair. Her face was somewhat pale from rarely being exposed to the sun. Behind her stood a woman with a sorrowful expression.

“My dear Zihan, Mommy will go and fetch that little boat for you,” the woman said.

“Oh no! That woman is coming to get our boat. We need to leave, fast!” Jibu frantically grabbed the oar and began rowing the boat.

However, Miyan just stared at the little girl in a daze, not hearing what Jibu was saying at all. The girl had two little braids tied with beautiful purple bows. As the wind blew, the bows fluttered slightly, looking just like two butterflies about to take flight.

“What a strange sight—a little bunny and a little mouse on the boat!” The woman squatted down and spoke gently, then reached out to take the boat.

“Miyan, run!” Jibu shouted desperately.

But it was too late. The woman had already picked up the boat. Jibu quickly jumped off and hid in the grass.

“Zihan, look, there’s a little mouse with a bow on its tail in the boat. There was also a bunny, but it ran away,” the woman said excitedly to her daughter.

“What a beautiful little mouse!” The girl’s eyes lit up, and she said happily, “With it to keep me company, Mom, I won’t be lonely anymore when I’m home alone.”

“Why didn’t Miyan run away when she knew there was danger?” Jibu watched them walk away, puzzled.

But he decided to rescue Miyan.

The little girl’s home was on the edge of town by the road, and she had a small garden full of flowers, surrounded by a bamboo fence.

That night, Jibu sneaked into the girl’s house.

“Miyan, it’s Jibu. Can you come out?” Jibu called softly under the window.

“Wait!” Miyan responded from inside.

After a while, Miyan appeared in front of Jibu.

“If you could come out, why didn’t you escape? I almost got eaten by a stray dog trying to save you,” Jibu asked her, clearly upset.

“Because the moment I saw Zihan, my heart was suddenly touched,” Miyan said softly, lowering her head.

“Why?” Jibu asked curiously.

“Her face was filled with loneliness and sadness, and she, like me, can’t walk.” In the moonlight, tears sparkled in Miyan’s eyes.

Jibu fell silent, remembering some things Miyan had told him.

When she was little, Miyan was once playing outside when a hungry fox spotted her. The fox pounced on her viciously and bit one of her hind legs.

She screamed in terror, and her parents rushed to her rescue. After a fierce struggle, Miyan was saved, but her parents never came back, and she lost that leg.

Without one leg, it was hard for her to move, and many of her friends didn’t want to play with her anymore. So she was lonely and sad every day until she met Jibu, who finally made her happy again.

Miyan told Jibu that Zihan’s father was a fisherman who had gone out to sea once and never came back. Her mother told her that her father had gone abroad and wouldn’t be back for a very long time. She missed her father terribly, so every day she waited by the roadside for him to return.

But one day, a drunk man rode a motorcycle toward her. When she woke up, she found she could never stand up again. Since then, many of her friends stopped playing with her. Most of the time, she sat in her wheelchair, talking to the flowers in the garden and the butterflies flitting among them.

She especially loved butterflies, and she had her mother tie two bows in her braids because it made her feel like she could fly freely like a butterfly.

At this point, Miyan burst into tears, and Jibu cried along with her. They both felt that Zihan was so pitiful; she had lost so much.

“Miyan, you did the right thing. We have to find a way to make Zihan happy,” Jibu said through his tears.

The next day, Zihan was still dreaming when she heard her mother call out in surprise, “Zihan, look! How strange! A bunny with bows on both ears is knocking on our door. When I went to pick it up, it was very gentle.”

Zihan opened her eyes, and sure enough, in her mother’s arms was a snow-white bunny with purple bows on both its ears, looking at her gently.
