Bread Wolf and Mr. Confused

There was an old man who ran a small bakery. The bread he made was fragrant and sweet, the best in town. The old man was getting on in years and had no help. What should he do?

The old man had a great solution! He made a bread wolf named Pete. Pete was very smart and soon learned how to work: buying flour, making bread, baking bread, delivering bread… The old man felt much more relaxed and could spend his days sitting in the corner sunbathing or taking a walk by the river.

The business at the small bakery was booming, and every loaf of bread was sold out. There was a man who often ate the bread made by the old man and Pete. He thought, “The bread is fragrant and delicious! I should make bread too and earn a lot of money.”

This man was Mr. Confused. He immediately set up a large bakery right next to the small bakery. Mr. Confused did everything in a muddled way, and the bread he baked was always burnt, hard, and bitter, making it the worst bread in town.

Only one person bought Mr. Confused’s bread, and that was the bread wolf. Since Pete himself made bread, why would he buy someone else’s bread? It was indeed strange!

Pete had a big stomach and needed to eat a lot of bread at once. To save the delicious bread for the children, he bought the burnt bread to fill his stomach.

Every day, the small bakery’s bread sold out early, while the large bakery couldn’t sell a single loaf. Mr. Confused had to stand on the street shouting, “Bread price slashed, come and buy!”

No matter how loud Mr. Confused shouted, no one bought his bread. Just when Mr. Confused was feeling very disappointed, the bread wolf would come over with a big smile and say, “Mr. Confused, I’ll buy all your bread.”

“Ah, dear Pete!” Mr. Confused drooled at the sight of the bread wolf and opened his arms to hug Pete, hoping to take a bite. Pete was made by the old man, so he was also a delicious, fragrant bread.

After being bitten once by Mr. Confused, Pete never dared to hug him again. Pete spent a small amount of money to buy all of Mr. Confused’s bread and ate it all. He just needed to fill his stomach and didn’t care about the taste.

Mr. Confused both hated and liked Pete. He hated Pete because his bread was too delicious, causing Mr. Confused’s bread to always be on sale. He liked Pete because, with Pete’s big stomach, the large bakery stayed open and didn’t have to close down.

When it came time to balance the accounts, Mr. Confused found that he hadn’t made any money. No matter how he thought about it, he couldn’t figure out why his bread was sold out but the large bakery didn’t make any money.
