Bear Story for Kid: The Bear Trades for Eggs

A bear was pushing a wheelbarrow through the forest, calling out as he walked, “Eggs for rice! I’ll trade rice for eggs!”

“Well, well, it’s the bear!” Hearing the bear’s call, Sister Fox poked her head out of her wooden house by the side of the road. She stopped the bear’s wheelbarrow, untied the rice sack, took a look inside, and said, “This is good rice. How do you want to trade?”

“This sack of rice for a basket of eggs,” the bear replied in his deep, gruff voice.

“Alright, you wait here, I’ll go get the eggs,” Sister Fox said and went back into her wooden house.

As the bear stood by the road, he quietly reminded himself, “Bear, oh bear, everyone says foxes are sly, love to lie, and love to cheat people. You have to be careful dealing with her…” Just as the bear was thinking this, Sister Fox came out carrying a basket of eggs.

The bear took a look and was puzzled. Huh? The eggs were all different sizes! The big ones were larger than melons, while the small ones were smaller than walnuts. Before the bear could say anything, Sister Fox spoke up, “The big eggs were laid by big chickens; the small eggs were laid by small chickens. Nothing strange about that.”

“Nothing strange at all,” the bear said, feeling a bit embarrassed, “but…”

“But what?” Sister Fox glared at the bear and said, “It looks like you don’t trust me, do you? Take a good look—do I look like a liar?”

The bear looked closely. Sure enough, Sister Fox was wearing a white apron, a red floral blouse, and was smiling sweetly. She didn’t look like a liar at all.

“Alright, let’s trade.” The bear carried the sack of rice into the wooden house and loaded the basket of eggs onto his wheelbarrow. When he got home, the bear placed the eggs on his warm brick bed, thinking he could hatch a flock of chicks and start a chicken farm.

But something strange happened.

On the first day, 30 little turtles hatched from the eggshells. The little turtles left the bear’s house and swam away along the stream;

On the second day, 60 little green snakes hatched from the eggshells. The little green snakes slithered away up the hillside and disappeared into the grass;

On the third day, 90 little crocodiles hatched from the eggshells. The crocodiles jumped into the lake with splashes and were never seen again;

On the fourth day, the largest and final egg cracked open, and out jumped a little ostrich. The little ostrich said to the bear, “If you ever have some free time, come visit me in the desert. See you!” With that, it stretched its long legs and ran off.

Looking at the empty eggshells all over his bed, the bear chuckled and said to himself, “Oh, Fox, you really got me this time!”
