Ant Counting Stars
Today is the little ant, Yiyi’s birthday. Mom boiled two small eggs for him and said, “What wish do you want to make?”
“Mom, I want you to tell me how many stars are in the sky.”
“Yiyi, Mom doesn’t know how many stars are in the sky, so I can’t tell you. How about making another wish?”
“No, I want this wish.”
“Alright, you go to school first, and later I’ll ask your grandma.” Yiyi happily put on his backpack and went to school.
After finishing the housework, Yiyi’s mom hurried over to Grandma’s house. When she arrived, she saw that Yiyi’s grandma was also busy, preparing something delicious for her little grandson.
Seeing Yiyi’s mom, Grandma asked, “Why did you come alone? Where’s my grandson Yiyi?”
“Yiyi went to school. Your big grandson is insisting I tell him how many stars are in the sky.”
Grandma said, “Why don’t you just tell him?”
“The problem is, I don’t know how many stars there are, so I didn’t tell him. That’s why I came to ask you.”
Grandma, busy preparing the food, suddenly realized, “Right, if you don’t tell him, how would he ever know how many there are?”
Yiyi’s mom started to worry. “What should I do? Yiyi will be home from school soon. What should I tell him?”
Grandma thought for a moment and said, “No problem, this is easy to handle. Don’t worry.”
“You go and gather all the other ants for me. Have each ant take a little red flag, assign them numbers, and then have them plant the flags on each star.”
Yiyi came home from school and hadn’t even entered the house before shouting, “Mom! Mom!” After calling a few times with no response, he went inside and saw that Mom wasn’t there.
Yiyi wondered where Mom had gone. Could she have gone to Grandma’s house? After pausing for a moment, he suddenly remembered that Mom had indeed gone to Grandma’s house, so Yiyi, still carrying his backpack, headed directly to Grandma’s place.
When Yiyi arrived, he saw many ants at Grandma’s house. Just then, he heard one of the ant uncles say, “We ants have counted a total of ‘987,753,’ and there are still five stars without red flags.”
Grandma then said, “Who hasn’t gone yet?”
Mom said, “It’s just you, me, and your little grandson left.”
Grandma added, “Including the three of us, there should be two stars left without red flags. So that means there are two more stars than ants. There must be ‘987,755 stars’ in the sky.”
The ant uncle agreed, “Yes, that’s correct.”
Little Ant Yiyi, moved to tears, thought to himself, “Grandma, Mom, and all the uncles really love me so much. I just mentioned it casually, but they actually went and counted the stars for me.” Little Ant Yiyi thought, “When I grow up, I must study hard, care for nature, and do more good deeds.”
