Animal tale: Mother Hen and the Fence

Mother Duck was building a fence with her ducklings, and Neighbor Hen was also building a fence with her chicks.

Mother Duck said to her ducklings, “Let’s make the fence even denser and more sturdy!”

One of the ducklings said, “Mom, it’s so tiring to make the fence both dense and sturdy! Look at Aunt Hen, she doesn’t demand much from her chicks, and they are working so lightly!”

Indeed, over there, the chicks were working lazily, randomly sticking branches into the ground, making a sparse and uneven fence. The chicks kept whining, “Mom, it’s so tiring, when will we be done with the fence?” Mother Hen, feeling sorry for them, said, “Oh my babies, don’t tire yourselves out! We’ll just make a casual fence.”

Mother Hen and her chicks quickly finished their fence, while Mother Duck and her ducklings were still working hard, sweating profusely.

Mother Duck sternly said to her ducklings, “Children, we can’t slack off. I’m being strict with you for your future! If you put in a bit more effort now, we’ll live peacefully later on!”

Mother Duck and her ducklings worked until dark to finish their fence. Mother Duck sighed with relief and said, “Children, tonight you can rest well and sleep peacefully.”

Mother Hen also told her chicks, “Babies, sleep peacefully, we have a fence now, so we don’t have to worry about the weasel anymore.”

In the middle of the night, the weasel came. It first went to the ducklings’ house, but their door and fence were so sturdy that it couldn’t get in. Disappointed, the weasel left the ducklings’ house, thinking: If the chicks’ fence is as sturdy as this, my plan for a feast tonight will fail!

The weasel then went to the chicks’ house, shaking the door and fence.

However, the fence collapsed before it even applied much force, and the weasel fell down hard.

“Who would’ve thought the chicks’ fence would be so flimsy!” the weasel thought, delighted and easily entered the chicks’ house. Ah, Mother Hen and the chicks were sound asleep! The weasel grabbed two chicks and ran away.

The chicks, who were sleeping, were suddenly grabbed by the weasel, and they cried out in panic, “Who is it? What are you doing? Help! Help!” But chickens can’t see at night, so Mother Hen, hearing the chicks’ cries, couldn’t see anything and could only shout anxiously, “Cluck cluck, let go of my babies! Cluck cluck, let go of my babies!”

The cries for help from the chicks grew fainter, and Mother Hen, filled with regret, began to cry loudly, “It’s all my fault! I loved you too much and relaxed my demands, not realizing that it wasn’t love but harm!”

The next day, with tears in her eyes, Mother Hen led the remaining chicks to dismantle the old fence and build a new one. This time, having learned her lesson, Mother Hen did not soften, no matter how much the chicks whined. She insisted on making the fence dense and sturdy.

Before nightfall, there was finally a strong and solid fence outside the chicks’ house. This time, the chicks were truly safe.
