Alexander and the Clockwork Mouse

“Help! Help! A mouse!” Cups, saucers, and spoons flew everywhere. Alexander had to quickly run back to his little hole. All he wanted was a bit of breadcrumb, but every time people saw him, they would scream and chase him with brooms.

One day, Alexander heard a squeaking sound coming from Annie’s room. Ah, another mouse! This one had two little wheels and a key on its back.

“Who are you?” Alexander asked.

“I am Willy, the clockwork mouse. People hug me, and at night I sleep on a soft pillow, alongside dolls and teddy bears. They all love me.”

“They don’t love me,” Alexander said sadly. “Let’s go to the kitchen to find some breadcrumbs.”

“Oh, I can’t,” Willy said. “I can only move when they wind me up. But I don’t mind.”

Alexander often went to visit Willy. He told Willy about his adventures with brooms, flying saucers, and mouse traps. Willy, in turn, told him about penguins and woolly bears.

When alone, Alexander would think of Willy with a bit of envy. “Why can’t I be a clockwork mouse like Willy?”

One day, Willy told Alexander, “In the garden lives a lizard that can do magic and transform one animal into another.”

That afternoon, Alexander went into the garden, “Lizard, lizard,” he called softly. Suddenly, a large lizard with flower and butterfly patterns on its body appeared before him.

“I heard you can turn me into a clockwork mouse?” Alexander asked with a trembling voice.

“Bring me a purple pebble when the moon is full,” the lizard replied.

Every day, Alexander searched the garden for a purple pebble. He found yellow, blue, and green ones, but no purple.

One day, in a corner of the pantry, he saw a box full of old toys, and there lay Willy.

“What happened?” Alexander asked in surprise. Willy explained that it was Annie’s birthday, and everyone brought new gifts. The next day, many old toys were thrown here.

“Poor Willy!” Alexander thought. Suddenly, he saw a small purple pebble.

A full moon hung in the sky. Excitedly, he ran to the garden, clutching the precious pebble tightly in his hand.

“Lizard, lizard,” he called. The leaves rustled, and the lizard appeared.

“What do you want to become?”

“I want…” Alexander hesitated, “Lizard, can you turn Willy into a mouse like me?” The lizard blinked, a dazzling light flashed, and then everything was silent. The purple pebble was gone.

Alexander ran back to the house. The box was still there, but it was empty.

“Too late. Poor Willy!” Alexander thought. But suddenly he saw a little mouse.

“Who are you?” Alexander asked.

“My name is Willy,” the mouse replied.

“Willy!” Alexander exclaimed with joy.

“The lizard… the lizard really turned you into a mouse!” He hugged Willy, and together they ran into the garden. They danced until sunset.
