A Real Love Story
A boy fell in love with a girl when he was eighteen. They were in the same year but not in the same class. The boy thought that he would confess his love once they got into college because he liked the girl’s flower-like smile, her pure voice, and her slender phoenix eyes. He felt that this girl should be his, so he thought, let’s wait a little longer.
They both got accepted into the same university. To be with the girl he loved, he chose the same university, even though he could have attended a better one. Once they were in college, the girl started to enjoy a colorful college life, joining various clubs and activities. Seeing her so happy, the boy thought, let’s wait a little longer. So, he still didn’t confess his feelings.
On Valentine’s Day in their sophomore year, he finally mustered the courage to confess, only to find a red rose already placed outside her window. He didn’t even take out the rose hidden in his jacket.
When the girl asked if he had something to say, he stuttered, “No, nothing. I just wanted to see if you would come to the hometown gathering.” The girl looked at him disappointedly, then watered the red rose, saying it was given by the class monitor.
After graduation, the girl got married, but the boy remained single. He followed her back to their small town, even though he had the opportunity to stay in the big city. He didn’t tell anyone about his feelings.
When people tried to set him up with someone, he always declined with a smile. People thought he was too picky and had high standards, so eventually, they stopped trying. He would always be alone, listening to music and reading books, not knowing how long he would keep his feelings.
At a class reunion, everyone got drunk, and someone jokingly asked him why he hadn’t taken advantage of the situation to be with her. He smiled and said nothing. But the girl, drunk, looked at him and said, “You don’t like me.” He froze, thinking of the rose he never took out, now a painful memory in his heart.
He had wanted to tell her about his love, but it seemed too late, really too late. He didn’t know that the girl’s marriage was falling apart and that she was getting a divorce.
When the girl’s divorce was finalized, he thought he could finally confess because she loved him too. He didn’t understand how they missed their chance. Fate had given them a chance for a good relationship, but why did it end this way?
Unfortunately, this was not the end. Just as he was about to confess, he was diagnosed with cancer. He couldn’t bear to make the girl share his pain, so he still didn’t say anything. He thought he would take this secret to the grave.
The girl came to see him and offered to take care of him, but he smiled and said, “I don’t like you. If I did, I would have confessed long ago. Why wait until now?” The girl’s pride was hurt, and she never came to see him again.
Sometimes, he would sit alone in his hospital bed, staring blankly at the falling leaves outside the window. He thought that his love, like the autumn leaves, was falling piece by piece, finally buried underground.
