A Promise of Heaven

“If I die tomorrow, you must be happy. We will meet again in our own heaven,” said Yuelan softly, blinking her eyes, murmuring, “I don’t want to,” Yuen touched Yuelan’s head. They both felt like the happiest people in the world. Yuen loved Yuelan deeply, so much so that it was bone-deep. He cared for her dearly, even holding her hand when crossing the road, fearing any harm might come to this fragile girl beside him. And Yuelan loved Yuen just as much, every morning running to buy breakfast for him.

Yuelan’s health was fragile; she was frequently ill. Yuen took special care of her. Whenever Yuelan fell ill, Yuen would take leave to look after her, even during exams. Yuelan’s family had left her a long time ago after a car accident, and since then, Yuelan had lived alone. Now, with Yuen by her side, Yuelan was happy and content. Perhaps the highest form of love a man can have for a woman is to treat her like his own child.

Yuen did just that, even going beyond. Yuen was afraid of losing Yuelan and wouldn’t let her do anything risky. And Yuelan loved Yuen. Seeing the boy beside her, unsure if he was her father or her boyfriend, Yuelan found solace in Yuen. If Yuelan was Yuen’s soul, then Yuen was Yuelan’s corporeal form. However, this beautiful arrangement didn’t last forever. Yuen was forever taken away from Yuelan in a car accident.

On the second anniversary of their love, a Sunday, they walked happily hand in hand, eating Yuelan’s favorite cotton candy. But at a busy crossroads, a speeding car headed towards Yuelan. In an attempt to protect her, Yuen pushed her away with both hands but never had the chance to protect her again.

He left her forever. Yuelan couldn’t believe it, couldn’t dare to believe that Yuen would leave her. With his last strength, Yuen said to Yuelan, “Darling, don’t cry. I won’t be able to… protect you anymore… Don’t be sad… I will… watch over you… in… heaven…” Yuelan was in agonizing pain.

When Yuen left, Yuelan held onto him tightly, not allowing anyone to touch him. Yuelan cried so bitterly, her voice hoarse, shouting, “Yuen, no, I don’t want you to go, don’t leave me, what should I do in the future, Yuen! Answer me, answer me! Can you speak…?” In that snowy night, Yuen left, leaving forever the one he loved the most, Yuelan. It was so unwilling, but this was fate’s cruelest arrangement!

A few years ago, Yuelan’s parents left her after a car accident, and now, Yuen left her in the same way, the three people she loved the most leaving her in the same way. She couldn’t believe this fact.

Every day, Yuelan locked herself in her room, looking at Yuen’s photos. Yuen’s smiling face would never appear before Yuelan again. Without Yuen’s care, Yuelan’s health deteriorated day by day. She stopped eating and drinking, still waiting for Yuen to bring her favorite breakfast to her, though it was impossible.

But Yuelan still waited, waited for her beloved Yuen. Yuelan’s body became so weak that it couldn’t get any weaker, but Yuelan was happy. She felt she would soon see Yuen’s smiling face. Unexpectedly, the joke they made two years ago became a reality. Also, in that snowy night, Yuelan flew towards Yuen, towards the heaven where Yuen was, towards the heaven they had promised each other, continuing their love story together!
