A Modern Famous Love

A boy fell in love with a girl when he was eighteen. They were in the same year but different classes. The boy thought that he would confess his feelings once they went to university because he loved her smile, her pure voice, and her delicate almond-shaped eyes. He felt she was meant to be his, so he decided to wait a little longer.

They both got accepted to the same university. To be with the girl he loved, the boy chose the same university, even though he could have gone to a better one. Once at university, the girl began to enjoy a vibrant college life, joining various clubs and activities. Seeing how happy she was, the boy thought he should wait a bit longer. So, he still didn’t confess.

On Valentine’s Day during their sophomore year, he finally mustered the courage to confess, only to find a red rose already placed at her window. He didn’t even take out the rose he had hidden in his jacket.

When the girl asked if he needed something, he stammered, “No, I just wanted to ask you about the alumni gathering.” She looked disappointed and then watered the rose, saying it was from their class monitor.

After graduation, the girl got married, but the boy never dated anyone. He followed the girl back to their small hometown, although he had the chance to stay in a big city. He did it for the girl he loved.

He never told anyone about his feelings. When people tried to introduce him to potential partners, he always politely declined with a smile. People thought he was too picky, so they gradually stopped trying to set him up. He spent his time alone, listening to music and reading, unsure how long he would hold onto his feelings.

During a reunion, after everyone had drunk too much, someone joked about how he was so close yet never won the girl. He just smiled and said nothing. The girl, also drunk, looked at him and said, “He doesn’t like me.”

He froze, remembering the rose he never gave her, now a painful mark on his heart. He wanted to tell her about his love, but he thought it was too late, not knowing she was getting divorced.

When the girl finally got divorced, he thought he could finally tell her his feelings because she loved him too. He couldn’t understand how they had missed their chance. Fate had given them an opportunity for a beautiful relationship, but why was it only giving him this ending now?

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the end. Just as he was about to confess, he was diagnosed with cancer. Not wanting the girl to share his pain, he still didn’t say anything. He decided to keep his secret until the end of his life.

The girl visited him and expressed her willingness to take care of him. He smiled and said, “I don’t like you. If I did, I would have confessed long ago. Why wait until now?”

Hurt, the girl’s pride was wounded, and she never visited him again. Sometimes, he would sit alone by his hospital bed, staring out at the falling leaves, thinking his love was like those autumn leaves, falling one by one and eventually buried in the ground.
