A Little Crab Looking for a Pond
After a heavy rain, the flood swept the little crab and his sick mother into a forest. When the flood receded, there was no water left in the forest. Luckily, Crab Mother found an abandoned bucket with some water in it, which allowed her and the little crab to barely survive.
A few days passed, and there was only half a bucket of water left.
The little crab said worriedly, “Mom, at this rate, we’ll soon die here.”
His mother sighed and said, “Yes, but I’m still sick, and you’re so small. What should we do?”
The little crab thought for a moment and said, “Mom, why can’t I go look for a pond? I’ve grown up!”
His mother gently touched his head and said, “It seems that’s the only choice. I’ll keep some water here as backup, and you can take the rest with you.”
“Mom, you must wait for me to come back and get you!” The little crab reluctantly set off.
He walked and walked for a long time until he met Uncle Ox. The little crab politely greeted him, “Hello, Uncle Ox!”
Uncle Ox was surprised and asked, “Little crab, where are you going?”
“I’m going to find a pond. Do you know where the pond is?” The little crab asked anxiously.
Uncle Ox smiled and said, “The pond is five miles away from here. You won’t be able to walk that far. How about you wait until I finish my work, and I’ll carry you there tomorrow.” The little crab knew he couldn’t wait any longer, so he politely declined Uncle Ox’s kind offer and continued on his way following the directions.
He walked and walked until he entered a dark bamboo forest. Scared, he curled up and muttered to himself, “This place is too scary. I’d better go back.” But then he thought of his sick mother, and he summoned up his courage to keep going, saying to himself, “Little crab, you can’t be afraid. Mom is waiting for you! You will find a big, clear pond and live freely with Mom!”
He finally walked out of the dark bamboo forest and into a bright field. Birds were chirping in the sky, eagles were circling overhead, and oxen were plowing the fields. Everything was so beautiful. He politely asked a little bird, “Little Bird, where’s the pond?”
The little bird said, “It’s just ahead! You’re almost there, keep going!”
Hearing this, the little crab gathered his courage again and kept moving forward.
Suddenly, his eyes lit up as a sparkling, bright pond appeared before him. He hurriedly ran towards it. The water in the pond was so clear that you could see the bottom. He shouted excitedly, “I found the big pond! Mom will have water to drink! This is wonderful!”
So, he quickly ran back through the fields and bamboo forest, shouting as he went, “I found the pond—I found the pond!” When he shared the good news with his mother, two warm tears rolled down her cheeks. She hugged the little crab and said, “My good child, my good child.”
From then on, the two of them finally lived a free and happy life.
