A Lifetime of Silent Love
He had just arrived at this high school, and she was already a student there. Luckily, they were in the same class.
He felt very unfamiliar in this new class, but seeing her made him feel a bit of warmth. She, on the other hand, knew she liked him from the moment she first saw him. However, in this strict school, romantic relationships were not allowed, so she never dared to confess her feelings.
Gradually, he noticed that she was always paying attention to him and slowly realized that she had a crush on him.
Over time, he started sending her notes, and eventually, they began a secret relationship. Their classmates thought they were just very good friends.
Whether it was fate or time playing tricks on them, their love only lasted one semester. Something unexpected happened: during the New Year’s Eve party, they performed together, one playing the guitar and the other the piano. Their music captivated the entire school, but just as the atmosphere reached its peak, the music suddenly stopped. She collapsed to the ground.
In the hospital, she refused to see anyone but him. She told him that her illness was incurable, and she had known about it for a long time.
She asked for his forgiveness for deceiving him. He said nothing, just hung his head. After that, he visited her in the hospital every day, telling her interesting stories and sharing the latest happenings at school.
Time couldn’t stand still and only brought pain. She passed away, leaving with a smile on her face.
He watched her go, his eyes dry and tearless.
She left him a letter:
“Cheng, thank you for giving me so much happiness. I can never see you again. Happy times always come and go quickly; they never last. You don’t need to be sad or shed tears for me. I just hope you live well for my sake. You don’t need to visit me often. I deceived you, and you must hate me, so you don’t need to worry about me.”
Many years later, the young man had become an old man with gray hair, with children and grandchildren. But he never forgot that past event. The letter aged with him.
As he grew old and sick, he struggled out of bed one day, walked alone to her grave, and buried that worn letter and a piece of paper at her gravesite. The paper read:
“Xue Ling, ah! So many years have passed. I thought everything could fade with time, but it hasn’t. I still can’t forget. After all these years, I finally have the courage to come here and see you. But now I am old and frail. I came here to tell you, ‘I’ve come to accompany you.’ Sincerely, Shi.”
The old man stood there for a long time before finally collapsing in front of her grave. After his death, he left two letters for his son. One was about his past, and the other read:
“My son, I have lived a lonely life. Do you know why you never had a mother? I never married. You were adopted from an orphanage. Please forgive me for hiding this from you for so many years. I have one request. After I die, please bury me next to your mother’s grave.
By the way, she wasn’t your real mother, only in name. She died when I was in high school. We loved each other, and she has always remained in my heart. I hope you can bury us together so we can be reunited in the afterlife.”
