Grandpa’s Meatball Soup
There was an old grandpa who lived alone. He often missed the days when he lived with grandma.
One morning, grandpa mumbled, “I really want to have a taste of the meatball soup grandma used to make!”
Deciding to cook a pot of meatball soup himself, he washed the pot and prepared a bunch of ingredients.
“Oh, grandma used to sing while making the soup. The water boils, gurgle gurgle. Meatballs, knead into balls. Plop! Little potatoes, peel the skin. Plop! Finally, add a bit of salt, cream, and pepper…” Soon, the meatball soup was ready!
Knock, knock, knock—someone was at the door.
When grandpa opened the door, he saw three little mice, a cat, and a dog outside.
“Wow, the mice and the cat are together!”
“When there’s something tasty, we’re all friends!”
“Come on in, I’m treating you!” Grandpa poured soup into their bowls, and they slurped it up, saying, “Thank you,” before they left.
In the pot, only a small amount of soup remained. Grandpa poured it into a bowl and drank it. Then, he tilted his head and wondered, “Why does grandma’s soup taste better?”
The next day, grandpa made another pot of soup.
The water boiled, gurgle gurgle. Meatballs, knead into balls. Plop! Then, it should be… little potatoes, peel the skin. Plop! Finally, add a bit of salt, cream, and pepper. Grandpa went to the market, bought ground meat and little potatoes, and cooked a pot of soup. “Ha, meatball soup is ready!”
Soon, he heard little footsteps outside. Knock, knock, knock, knock, patter. When grandpa opened the door, the same three little mice and a cat stood there. They exclaimed, “Wow, it smells so good—”
“Wow, the mice and the cat are here together again!”
“When there’s something tasty, we’re all friends.”
“Is that so? Do you want to drink soup together?” Grandpa brought out four bowls and served them soup—three bowls for the mice and one for the cat. After finishing the soup, they said “Thank you” and left.
Today, there was only a small amount of soup left in the pot. “If only I had cooked a bit more.” Grandpa poured the remaining soup into a bowl and drank it. He thought again, “Why does grandma’s soup taste better?”
Another day passed, and grandpa decided to take the largest pot from the shelf. “If I cook soup in this pot, it’ll be enough for everyone, even if more come. Right, how did grandma sing… The water boils, gurgle gurgle. Meatballs, knead into balls. Plop! Little potatoes, peel the skin. Plop! Little onions, roll, plop! Mmm, and then: carrots sliced into rounds, spinning, plop! Finally, add a bit of salt, cream, and pepper.” Grandpa went to the market, bought ground meat, little potatoes, little onions, and thin carrots, and cooked a pot of soup.
“Ha, meatball soup is ready!” Again, little footsteps sounded outside. Knock, knock, knock, patter, patter, patter. Grandpa opened the door and saw the mice, cat, dog, and a little boy. They all exclaimed, “Wow, it smells so good—”
“Oh my, today you are all friends too. Come on in, I’m treating you!”
The little boy asked happily, “Really? Is it true?”
“Of course it is! Look at this big pot, there’s plenty of soup, come in and enjoy!” Grandpa said with a smile. The little boy turned around and shouted, “Everyone don’t hide, come in quickly! Grandpa says he’s treating us to soup!”
Patter, patter, patter—1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Nine little kids ran in.
“Oh dear!” Grandpa was startled but quickly counted them and got the bowls ready. Three bowls for the mice, one for the cat, one for the dog, and ten for the children—a total of fifteen bowls. Then, he served them the soup.
Slurp, slurp, slurp, slurp, slurp, slurp, shout, shout, shout… “Grandpa, come drink with us!” Grandpa looked into the pot and saw that there was only a little left again today. “Sure, let’s drink together!” Grandpa poured the remaining soup into a bowl and drank it.
“Delicious! Finally, it tastes just as good as grandma’s!” Grandpa happily said, “Alright, tomorrow I’ll cook soup with all the pots!”
