grasshopper Story: Autumn Visits
The grasshopper Lulu was very playful but also eager to learn. Whenever he saw something new and interesting, he would widen his eyes, gather his strength, and jump over to ask about it. With autumn arriving, he decided to visit some other small animals.
The forest was bustling with activity, as the little animals were busy with their own tasks. Lulu first greeted the little squirrel, “Why are you carrying so many nuts?” The squirrel was panting heavily, his fluffy tail drooping like a big fan from the treetop. He looked around and noticed Lulu tilting his head to speak to him. “Hehe, we’re storing food for winter!” The squirrel thought Lulu was quite funny for not knowing such a simple fact.
Just thinking about winter made Lulu shiver. Yes, how cold it would be then! The wind would howl fiercely, sharper than knives, and all the little animals would hide in their warm homes—who would come out looking for food?
After bidding farewell to the squirrel, Lulu hopped around a creek, jumped over a flowerbed, and lay down to rest under a big tree. But before long, he was awakened by a clattering sound. It turned out to be the magpie, using a small hammer to drive in nails. This time, Lulu was much wiser; he softly asked, “Are you building a house to prepare for winter?” The busy magpie, unable to pause, asked Lulu to pass him a nail while saying, “Yes, I won’t be like the寒号鸟, who just laments in winter.”
“Oh, what’s wrong with the寒号鸟?” Lulu couldn’t help but inquire further. “You don’t know?” The magpie widened its eyes in surprise. “The寒号鸟, hmph! He only knows how to boast about his singing voice, without thinking of building a nest. When winter comes, he’ll be in trouble, shivering under a tree!”
So there was such a story. Lulu nodded thoughtfully. He politely said goodbye to the magpie and then encountered a group of wild geese flying in a “V” formation, hurrying in one direction. Where were they going? Lulu jumped up and grabbed the wing of the last goose, eager to find out. The goose replied, “Little grasshopper, we’re heading south for the winter. Let me go, or I’ll fall behind!”
Now Lulu understood; all the animals were actively preparing for the arrival of winter.
Suddenly, Lulu noticed a little bear with a round, plump backside, drinking honey from a bucket. Why wasn’t the bear preparing for winter at all? Wouldn’t he end up like the寒号鸟?
Lulu was a kind-hearted child. He jumped over and patted the bear’s bottom, loudly reminding him to store some food and build a house to prepare for winter. Unexpectedly, the bear burst into laughter, shaking his chubby hands, and kept saying, “No need, no need! When winter comes, I’ll just lie in a tree hole and sleep—this is called hibernation.”
Hibernation? What a strange way to get through winter! Lulu truly opened his eyes with this visit in autumn.
