The Lost Duckling
Who draped the tall mountain top in a red scarf?
Oh! It’s the sunset, leaving behind a piece of bright red sunset glow.
The fields are quiet, the riverside is quiet, the wind is cool, the woods are darkening, and night is coming.
“Waa waa waa, I want to go home…”
The little duckling is lost and crying sadly.
“Don’t cry, don’t cry, little duckling, I’ll take you home.”
A little white rabbit comes running over and warmly hugs the little duckling.
The little duckling smiles, “Quack quack quack…”
“Tell me, where is your home?”
“It’s where there’s water; my home is there.”
The little white rabbit leads the little duckling to the riverside. The water flows gently, fish swim in the water, but this isn’t the little duckling’s home.
“Waa waa waa, I want to go home…”
“Don’t cry, don’t cry, little duckling, I’ll help you.”
A little frog hops over, its eyes wide and round.
“Tell me, what is your mother’s name?”
“Her name is Mama.”
The little frog is puzzled; where could it find her?
“Little duckling, I’ll take you home.”
A little goose waddles over.
“Tell me, what is your father’s name?”
“His name is Papa.”
The little goose is stumped; what to do now?
“Little duckling, I’ll take you home.”
A little squirrel jumps down from a tree.
“Tell me, what is your name?”
“I’m Mama’s baby.”
The little squirrel sighs, unsure of what to do.
“Waa waa waa, I want to go home…”
The little duckling starts crying again.
A little bird flies over and wipes the duckling’s tears.
“Don’t worry, don’t worry, little duckling, I can find your home.”
The little bird flies and flies, to the west, to the east, asking along the way:
“Who knows? Who knows? Whose duck mama lost her baby? With a red beak, red feet, and a body of yellow fluff…”
The old cow hears and moos, “Who lost a duck baby?”
The goat hears and bleats, “Who lost a duck baby?”
The white horse hears and neighs, “Who lost a duck baby?”
The yellow dog hears and barks, “Who lost a duck baby?”
The flower cat hears and meows, “Who lost a duck baby?”
Moo moo moo, baa baa baa, neigh neigh neigh, woof woof woof, meow meow meow; it’s a lively scene with sounds high and low, calling out from all directions.
Duck Mama rushes over, “Oh dear, I’ve lost my duck baby…”
Upon seeing Mama, the little duckling quacks and claps its hands, laughing, running, shaking, and hurrying, but trips and rolls right to Mama, cuddling up:
“Mama, Mama, I’ve come back from a far, far away place…”
“My child, you went so far; what did you find?”
“I found many good friends.”
The little duckling lifts its head, stands on tiptoes, and happily quacks.
