The Little Bunny’s Shadow

In the morning, the sun rises, and the little bunny hops along the road. She has long ears, a chubby body, short hands, and plump feet. The sun shines from behind her, casting a big shadow in front. The shadow of the little bunny also has long ears, a chubby body, short hands, and plump feet. When the little bunny picks flowers, the shadow picks flowers too. When the little bunny chases butterflies, the shadow chases butterflies. Wherever the little bunny goes, the shadow follows.

As the weather gets hotter, the sun rises higher and higher, slowly climbing from the slanting east to the center of the sky. The shadow, which started out long and chubby, gradually becomes shorter. When the sun reaches its highest point, the little bunny’s shadow is just a tiny dot. It shrinks beneath the little bunny’s feet, trembling, as if it might disappear at any moment.

The shadow says, “Little bunny, I’m really scared of the sun. When the sun shines on me, I melt away, getting smaller and smaller, until I’m gone.” The little bunny puffs out her chest to make herself look bigger, covering more of the shadow. She says, “Come, stand under my feet. I’ll use my body to protect you.”

In the afternoon, the sun slowly slides westward, moving from above the little bunny to in front of her. The shadow peeks out from under her feet, gradually growing longer again. It transforms back into a little shadow with long ears, a chubby body, short hands, and plump feet. Wherever the little bunny goes, the shadow follows.

As the sun tilts westward, the shadow grows longer and longer.

When the sun finally drops behind the mountains, the sky darkens. Little friends, where do you think the shadow goes at this time?
