Campus romance

In a university campus, beneath a row of green willows, a boy named Yang Qing walked alongside a girl named Mei Zi. Yang Qing was calm and reserved, not one to seek attention.

Mei Zi was quiet and soft-spoken. The two walked in silence for a long time. Several times, Yang Qing opened his mouth to speak, but the words never came out. He had liked Mei Zi since the first day of school; her innocent face had etched itself in his mind. He believed that she should understand his feelings, so he thought there was no need to confess—after all, they shared common interests and a deep understanding; words seemed unnecessary.

Mei Zi wasn’t unaware of his feelings, but she was unsure. She often wondered if it was love. Why didn’t he ever confess? If he truly had no feelings for her, then what did his gaze, filled with affection, mean?

Yang Qing’s silence made Mei Zi hesitant to ask anything. As their three years of university approached an end, he still hadn’t made any move, and Mei Zi felt disheartened. With this thought, she started to distance herself from him, trying to escape the quiet pain in her heart.

Yang Qing was confused and anxious about Mei Zi’s sudden coldness. Especially when he saw her with other boys, it felt like a part of him was being torn apart. Finally, he couldn’t bear it anymore. As Mei Zi walked out of the classroom with another boy, he followed and called out, “Mei Zi…”

But at that moment, he lost his courage. Instead, he managed to ask in a voice barely above a whisper, “Mei Zi, could you help me copy some notes? I need them later.”

Mei Zi, a bit disappointed, replied softly, “Not today. I’m going out.”

Yang Qing grew anxious, fidgeting in the hallway, wanting to say something but his words stuck in his throat, making his face flush.

The boy pulled on Mei Zi’s arm and said, “Let’s go, Mei Zi!”

Mei Zi nodded, and Yang Qing reluctantly stepped aside. As she brushed past him, Yang Qing’s mind went blank, and he shouted, “Mei Zi, don’t go!”

Mei Zi paused for a moment but then continued to walk away.

In a barely audible voice, Yang Qing called out behind her, “I love you…”

Mei Zi’s body jolted, and she turned around, her heart racing. “What did you just say?”

Yang Qing stood there, restless, his hands tightly clenched together. He raised his voice slightly, “Mei Zi, I love you…”

Mei Zi had waited so long to hear those words. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she felt an overwhelming rush of emotion as they streamed down her face…
