Send a letter to Black Wolf

“To the Black Wolf King of Black Wolf Mountain, Black Wolf Cave, Purple Mist Forest…”
Although the writing on the envelope was crooked, it sat on the table like a ticking time bomb. Hop-Tail Rabbit’s voice trembled as she spoke, “Hop-Hop Rabbit, let’s return this letter, or get another mail carrier to deliver it.”

Hop-Hop Rabbit shook his head and said, “How can we do that? Delivering letters is our duty as mail carriers…”

“But this letter is for the Black Wolf King! Delivering it is like offering rabbit meat to a wolf!” Hop-Tail Rabbit was getting anxious. “I don’t want to risk my life for a letter!”

“Then I’ll deliver it. You can take care of the other letters.” With that, Hop-Hop Rabbit grabbed the letter and hopped away.

Black Wolf Mountain was far, and after walking for half the day, Hop-Hop Rabbit finally arrived. His heart began to pound wildly.

Suddenly, a strong wind blew, and three black wolves leaped out, surrounding Hop-Hop Rabbit in a triangular formation. Their eyes glowed with menace as they prepared to pounce.

“Hey, I’m here to deliver a letter to your Black Wolf King!” Hop-Hop Rabbit quickly raised the letter in his hand.

“A letter? Little rabbit, don’t think you can trick us. It won’t stop us from eating you. Haha, I love braised rabbit!” one of the wolves said with a wide grin.

Hop-Hop Rabbit cried out, “I’m not lying! Why else would I come here? I need to see your king…”

One of the other wolves scratched his head. “Hmm, this little rabbit might have a point, but we haven’t eaten rabbit meat in a long time…”

Hop-Hop Rabbit hurriedly said, “You can’t eat me! I still need to deliver this letter to your king. How about this—I’ve got a few carrots here. You can have them instead.”

“Hey, you stupid rabbit! Are you insulting us? I’ve never eaten vegetables!” one wolf yelled angrily.

“Come on, stop shouting. Food is food. I’ve tried carrots before—they’re sweet and not too bad,” another wolf said, grabbing a carrot and munching on it with satisfaction.

With the carrots buying him some time, Hop-Hop Rabbit was spared for the moment. Soon, they led him to the Black Wolf King.

“Wow, this rabbit looks so plump. He must be delicious. Even if we can’t eat him, a bit of rabbit soup would be good enough,” muttered the wolves standing around. There were at least forty or fifty of them, their eyes glowing with hunger.

Hop-Hop Rabbit nearly collapsed in fear but mustered his courage, hopping forward to hand the letter to the Black Wolf King.

“Ah, it’s a letter from my sister!” The king quickly tore it open. “Wonderful news! My sister has given birth to five wolf pups. Haha, I’m an uncle now!”

Overjoyed, the Black Wolf King leapt from his seat. Then, his gaze fell on Hop-Hop Rabbit. “Little rabbit, you’ve got guts. Aren’t you afraid I’ll eat you?”

Hop-Hop Rabbit’s voice trembled slightly. “Black Wolf King, of course I’m afraid, but delivering letters is my duty. I couldn’t avoid coming.”

The Black Wolf King laughed even louder. “Little rabbit, you’re brave and have a strong sense of duty. That’s impressive. But our duty as wolves is to eat rabbits, so even though I appreciate you delivering the letter, I can’t let you go. Tell you what, I’ll let you choose how you want to be eaten—braised or stewed? Or perhaps you’d prefer another way?”

“Yes, yes! The king is right. Come on, little rabbit, choose how you’d like to be eaten,” the wolves all laughed together.

Sweat poured down Hop-Hop Rabbit’s face as he thought hard for a moment. Finally, he raised his head and said, “Black Wolf King, I’ve been sick these past few days, so my meat must taste sour. Hmm, to make it taste better, you’ll need to stew me with one of the newly born wolf pups. Yes, just one of your sister’s pups will do.”

The Black Wolf King was startled for a moment, then burst into laughter. “My sister lives far away, and I’m not going to make a long trip. Tell you what, little rabbit, I’ll write a letter, and you can deliver it to my sister for me.”

“Sure, Black Wolf King! I’ll make sure the letter gets to her,” Hop-Hop Rabbit said with a big smile. It seemed that the Black Wolf King wasn’t going to eat him after all. He could finally leave safely.
