The Squirrel’s Red Carpet

Autumn had arrived, and the mountains were covered with maple trees, their branches adorned with vibrant red leaves. Under the bright sunlight, they looked especially radiant.

“Friends, let’s go play on the ground,” said the red leaves as the wind picked up. They twirled in the air, like fluttering red butterflies dancing in the breeze.

The little squirrel poked its head out of its tree hole, and upon seeing the swirling red leaves, exclaimed joyfully, “Ah! What beautiful red leaves! If only I could make a red carpet out of them, wouldn’t that be wonderful?”

“Hey, Brother Squirrel, can we be friends?” the red leaves greeted the little squirrel warmly.

The little squirrel picked up a tiny red leaf and whispered, “I want to use you and your friends to make a beautiful red carpet. Would that be okay?”

“A red carpet? We can become a red carpet?” The red leaf blinked its eyes and said, “Sure! That sounds wonderful!”

Quickly, the little red leaf spread the news to all the other red leaves.

“Great! Let’s help the little squirrel make a red carpet!” they all said excitedly.

The red leaves lined up, eagerly waiting for the squirrel to use them for the carpet.

“What shape should the carpet be?” The little squirrel pondered and pondered until it finally came up with what it thought was the most beautiful design — a maple leaf-shaped red carpet.

By the time the little squirrel had arranged the red leaves into a stunning maple leaf-shaped carpet, the sky had grown dark. The little squirrel lay on the red carpet, dreaming happily: “I’ll invite many friends to play joyfully on this carpet. I’ll sleep on it and have so many beautiful dreams!”

“Little Squirrel, hurry and take us into your tree hole. We’re afraid of the wind!” the red leaves on the carpet pleaded.

“No, no! I want my friends to play games, sing, and dance on this carpet,” the little squirrel replied.

“Whooosh—la-la—whooosh—la-la—”

Just as the squirrel finished speaking, the wind picked up again. The squirrel’s beautiful red carpet turned into a flutter of red butterflies and flew away…

“My beautiful red carpet is gone, and my lovely dreams have flown away too,” the little squirrel sobbed sadly.

“Swish—swish—swish—” In the autumn breeze, pine needles from the pine trees began to fall one by one.

The little squirrel picked up a pine needle, heartbroken. “Little pine needle, how I miss my red carpet!”

“Brother Squirrel, you can use us to string together the red leaves! That way, the wind won’t blow them away,” the pine needle squeaked sharply.

Hearing this, the little squirrel couldn’t stop grinning. It shouted into the autumn wind, “Red leaves, come back! Come make another red carpet for me!”

The red leaves heard the squirrel’s call, and in the wind, they danced their way back to the little squirrel. The little squirrel used one pine needle after another to string the red leaves together.

By dawn, the little squirrel had finally made a huge red carpet.

“Friends, come quickly! Come play on my red carpet!” The little squirrel climbed to the top of the pine tree and shouted loudly.

Before long, Sister Bunny arrived, Sister Pheasant came, Brother Monkey appeared… Many, many little friends gathered on the red carpet, singing, dancing, and playing games.

“Whooosh—la-la—” The wind picked up again.

“Don’t worry, don’t worry, the pine needles are holding it together. It won’t blow away,” the little squirrel said happily.

“Whooosh—la-la—” The wind continued to blow.

In the autumn breeze, the red carpet, carrying the little squirrel, Sister Bunny, Sister Pheasant, and the others, began to rise.

“Ah! I touched the clouds!”

“Haha! I can see the Milky Way!”

The red carpet flew higher and higher, further and further, heading toward the distant fairy-tale kingdom.
