The Little Red Umbrella

There was a little white rabbit who had a small red umbrella. The little rabbit looked up at the blue sky, then at the umbrella on her shoulder. She thought to herself, “Mom is so fussy! Why did she insist I bring an umbrella on such a nice day? Carrying it is exhausting!”

So, the little rabbit hung the umbrella on a big tree and happily walked away. As she walked, she sang, “Under the blue sky, the little umbrella can take a nap; under the blue sky, the little rabbit can go on a journey!”

But the little umbrella was upset. It hung on the tree branch, all alone. Just then, a little bear happened to pass by. The umbrella saw the little bear and was delighted. It wished so much that the bear would take it with him! The umbrella swayed its long handle back and forth, trying to get the bear’s attention. The bear curiously looked at the umbrella, amazed that there was such a thing as a moving umbrella. Then, the bear picked up the little umbrella and walked away.

Now, the umbrella was overjoyed and sang to itself, “Under the blue sky, the little rabbit abandoned me; under the blue sky, the little bear became my new owner!”

Later, it started raining, and the bear opened the umbrella. It was truly a fine umbrella, bright red all over, just like a little rain house for the bear or a red sun in the rain.

The bear felt cheerful too, and as he walked, he sang, “Under the rainy sky, I carry the little umbrella; under the rainy sky, the little umbrella becomes my big house!”

The bear walked and walked until he saw the little rabbit, who was hiding under a tree to avoid the rain. The bear ran over, wanting to share the umbrella with the little rabbit. When the rabbit saw that the bear had brought back the umbrella she had abandoned, she was overjoyed.

But when the umbrella saw the rabbit, it realized it was the same rabbit who had abandoned it. The umbrella got angry and didn’t want to shield the little rabbit from the rain at all. The umbrella started shaking again, and when the bear wasn’t paying attention, it slipped from his hand and was blown away by the strong wind!

The bear and the little rabbit hurriedly chased after the umbrella. The umbrella floated freely in the air, feeling pleased with itself, and sang again, “Under the blue sky, the little rabbit despised me; under the rainy sky, no one can catch me!”

The little rabbit looked up at the umbrella flying in the air and deeply regretted leaving it behind earlier.

The umbrella flew and flew, and the wind grew stronger. In such strong winds, the umbrella couldn’t control itself anymore. It bumped into tree branches and rolled down hills, getting all battered and confused. At that moment, the umbrella also began to regret its actions. It wished so much that the little bear or the little rabbit were holding onto it tightly.

Finally, the umbrella fell into a dirty, muddy ditch.

The little bear and the little rabbit ran over and pulled the umbrella out of the muddy ditch. The little rabbit looked at her small red umbrella, now all dirty and muddy, but she didn’t mind it at all. And so, the little bear and the little rabbit walked together under the dirty little umbrella in the rain.

The rain came down harder, but the dirty little umbrella was washed clean by the rain, and the laughter of the little bear and the little rabbit grew louder and louder.

Of course, the happiest one of all was the little umbrella. Listen! It’s chatting and singing with the raindrops—drip, drip, drip!
