The Laziness Lesson of an Earthworm

Once upon a time, the earthworm had a delicate and petite body, much like a bee, with shiny golden wings that allowed it to soar freely into the blue sky and dive into flower beds. The earthworm and the bee were great friends.

One day, the earthworm caught a cold and stayed at home to rest, while the diligent bee gathered honey and helped it find food. After a few days, the earthworm recovered from its illness, but it had grown accustomed to lying around without working, enjoying the comfort of having food delivered to it. So, it continued to laze around at home, acting spoiled. The bee had no choice but to go out and gather honey on its own while the earthworm stayed home, snoring away.

The kind-hearted bee tried to persuade it, saying, “Dear Earthworm, you should really get out and work. If you don’t move your wings, they’ll eventually stop working, and you won’t be able to fly anymore.” The earthworm scoffed, “You’re lying. How could I not be able to fly when I have wings?” The bee shook its head and flew away. From then on, the earthworm spent its days eating and sleeping, without doing any work.

Before long, the earthworm noticed that its wings had become stiff and its body had grown fat. This made the earthworm anxious. It climbed out of bed, spread its wings, and tried to fly, but its wings were no longer soft and light like before. It only flapped them a few times before falling to the ground. Finally, with a “snap,” the wings broke off, leaving the earthworm with only a round, long, wriggly body. Oh no, how could it face anyone now? The earthworm regretted its laziness and began to cry.

Just then, the bee returned from gathering honey, buzzing around. Embarrassed to be seen by the bee, the earthworm burrowed into the soil and didn’t dare to come out. To this day, the earthworm still hides in the dirt. However, after realizing its mistake, it became much more diligent and now tirelessly loosens the soil.
