Stray Cat Fufu

“Maybe I really should build a house for myself.”

Stray cat Fufu squatted on the tiled roof, watching the yellow leaves fall from the autumn trees, and thought about what had happened yesterday.

Yesterday, he got caught in the rain on the side of the street. Little Kitty Smiley, who lived in the fancy house, saw him and mocked him, “Tsk tsk tsk, poor kid with no house to live in!”

Fufu glared at her fiercely, “Hmph, just wait and see. Before winter comes, I’ll definitely have a house!”

But how could he get a house of his own?

With a swift leap, Fufu jumped down to the ground. In the broken mirror by the wall, his leopard-like markings appeared, making him look fierce. He suddenly felt a sound pass through his throat and reach the tip of his tongue…

“Meow~” he called out, but something seemed off. “I wanted to roar like a leopard, so why…”

He looked at his reflection in the mirror again—a lean face, big ears, and a scar on the tip of his nose, which he got from another cat during a fight over food.

Just then, a bird in the tree laughed, “Fufu, daydreaming again? You’re a stray cat, not a mighty leopard!”

Fufu angrily waved his paw, and the bird flew to a higher branch. “Not talking to you anymore, I’m off to work!”

Work? That gave Fufu an idea. “I can get a job, earn money, and build a house!”

No sooner said than done!

Even though Fufu didn’t like water, he still took a bath before looking for a job.

Walking down the street, he saw his reflection in a closet window and thought he looked great!

He thought, With how handsome I am, it’d be a crime not to find a job.

Sure enough, Fufu quickly found a job—not because of his looks, but thanks to a reliable friend, Doggy Wangwang.

Wangwang worked as a bodyguard for a family, and coincidentally, the owner needed another guard to watch over the baby. Wangwang recommended Fufu.

Fufu was agile, and when he rocked the cradle, the baby didn’t cry or fuss. The owner immediately decided to hire Fufu.

Thus, Fufu got his first job, and he thought, I’ll definitely have a house by winter.

But good times didn’t last long.

One day when the owner wasn’t home, a thief sneaked in and stole many things.

Fufu, who was upstairs with the baby, heard a noise. When he came out and saw the stranger, he jumped three feet high in fright and quickly hid under the bed.

When the owner found out, they were furious and didn’t give Fufu a single penny. They kicked him back out onto the street.

Despite this, Fufu soon got a second job opportunity.

His friend, Hamster Ballball, worked as a pet in a café. Ballball said the job was easy—all he had to do was entertain the customers.

Entertaining people? That’s easy!

Fufu quickly went for an interview. When he met the boss, he purred continuously and rubbed up against them. The boss laughed so hard they cried!

So, Fufu got his second job, and he thought, I’ll definitely have a house by winter.

But bad luck struck again.

That day, Fufu worked as usual. He strutted his catwalk, stretched lazily, and rolled around—he was so cute that the customers were laughing out loud.

One customer couldn’t resist reaching out to touch his soft belly, but the moment they did, Fufu scratched them with his paw. Afterward, he overheard the customer arguing with the boss. Soon after, he was out of a job again…

Wandering the streets, Fufu was now extremely discouraged. Autumn was almost over, and winter was coming, but he hadn’t earned a single cent…

Sigh! I’m no good at anything!

He regretted bragging in front of Little Kitty Smiley.

A yellow leaf drifted down from the tree and landed on the ground. Fufu couldn’t hold back his tears anymore. “I won’t have a house this winter…”

Just then, a little boy squatted down and looked at him. “Kitty, what’s wrong?”

“Sniff, my name’s Fufu…” Fufu poured out all his troubles in one breath. The little boy nodded and walked away. Fufu saw him talking to a woman, and as they talked, they kept glancing back at him.

Before long, the little boy came running back, happy and excited. He squatted down and said, “Fufu, don’t cry anymore. You’ve got a job now!”

“I have a job?”

“Yes, I’m hiring you to come to my house and catch mice!”

Fufu’s eyes lit up, and he immediately stopped crying. “Yep, catching mice is what I’m best at!”

“And you won’t have to worry about where to live anymore!”

“Why?”

“Because I want you to live with us!”

From then on, the little boy had Fufu’s company, and he was never woken up by the sound of mice gnawing again at night!

Fufu, doing what he was good at, felt like everything was going smoothly. He never got into trouble again!

Time flew by, and snowflakes started falling outside the window. Fufu lay in a warm cat bed, looking across the street at the fancy house where Little Kitty Smiley lived.

Now, Smiley wouldn’t dare mock Fufu for not having a house because Fufu’s house was much bigger than hers.

As the night slowly fell, Fufu leaped down to the ground. In the mirror of the living room, his leopard-like markings appeared, making him look mighty once again
