The Wave and the Little Grass
Out of nowhere, a stream started flowing, cheerfully rushing through the silent valley every day, raising beautiful waves along the way.
One day, a seed dropped from a bird’s wing and landed on a rock in the middle of the stream. When spring arrived, the seed sprouted and gradually grew into a lovely green blade of grass. With a smiling face, she sang and danced in the sunshine.
“Your singing is beautiful, and your dancing is graceful,” said a wave that was rushing by, suddenly turning around and enthusiastically speaking to the little grass.
Delighted to have someone to talk to, the little grass beamed, “Would you like to jump up here and play with me?”
“I can’t,” said the wave, “I have to go to the sea.”
“What is the sea?”
“I don’t know, but I was born to go to the sea. All waves are.”
“The sea must be so happy to have so many waves coming to him,” the little grass said dreamily, gazing toward the end of the stream. “It’s a pity I’m not water.”
“Being a blade of grass is beautiful too. Goodbye, I have to go.”
“Wait,” the little grass hurriedly pleaded, “If you jump up here and play with me for a while, I’ll show you thirty different dances.”
“Wow, you can dance so many dances!” The wave, already turned away, spun back around.
“And I can even make you a little chair.” The little grass bent down, stretched two leaves into the stream, and with effort fished out four or five colorful pebbles, arranging them in a circle on the rock.
“So fun!” The wave leaped and landed in the circle on the rock.
“Thank you.” The little grass giggled and extended her leaves to embrace the wave. The wave felt a delightful tickle all over and laughed along with her for a good while.
Then, the little grass began to perform her various dances… The wave was utterly captivated.
At night, the wave and the little grass looked at the moon and stars in the sky, sharing stories of their lives. Half a month later, the wave waved goodbye and headed toward the horizon.
When autumn came, the little grass’s body began to turn yellow. By winter, she withered and collapsed onto the rock. Endless waves rushed past her. Among the countless waves, a familiar figure gradually emerged.
It was the wave! He had come back!
He dashed to the rock and shouted, “Little grass, I’m back!”
There was no reply. The wave leaped onto the rock and embraced the withered little grass, weeping. He decided not to go to the sea anymore and stayed on the rock to guard the little grass.
When the spring breeze blew again, the wave was overjoyed to discover that the little grass’s body was turning green. Then, she straightened up and came back to life.
“Little grass!”
“Wave!”
The two friends hugged each other tightly.
“Wave, how did you come back?”
“Thanks to the sun. I reached the sea, where all the waters of the world gather and laugh together. Then the sun turned me into vapor, and I floated across the sky to all corners of the earth. Since I missed you so much, I flew towards this mountain, and when I got here, I turned into a raindrop and fell back down. And that’s how we met again.”
“Oh, that sounds a lot like my experience,” the little grass said with a playful smile.
In that moment, the two friends realized the secret of their lives.
“Goodbye, little grass. The secret of life is calling me.”
After saying this, the wave jumped into the stream and headed toward the distance. The little grass was no longer sad. She knew the wave would return. And the wave no longer worried that the little grass would wither, for he knew the spring breeze would come to awaken her again.
