The Clever Frog Outsmarts the Big Bad Wolf
In the grass by the pond, there grew a wild chili pepper plant, with tiny little upward-pointing chili peppers. Just smelling them would make anyone sneeze and tear up—they were incredibly spicy!
One day, a big bad wolf, carrying a sack on his back, was resting under a big tree by the pond. The clever frog was near the tree in the grass, and he noticed that the sack on the wolf’s back was moving.
The clever frog asked the wolf, “Big bad wolf, what’s in the sack on your back?”
“I’m not telling you. It’s my secret.”
The clever frog looked up at the tree and said, “Well, I can tell you an important secret.”
“What secret?” The big bad wolf also looked up at the tree.
“Don’t you see? There’s a big bird’s nest in the tree, and the birds recently laid eggs. If you stand under the tree with your mouth wide open and shake the tree hard, eggs will fall right into your mouth. Just yesterday, a fox ate three eggs this way!”
“Really?” The big bad wolf, hearing this, immediately put down the sack, opened his mouth wide, and started shaking the tree vigorously. But in reality, there was no bird’s nest at all. At that moment, the clever frog picked three small chili peppers from the grass and threw them into the wolf’s mouth.
The wolf thought the eggs had fallen down, and he bit down hard.
The big bad wolf immediately started dancing around, holding his tail.
“What kind of dance is that? It looks terrible!” the clever frog said, as he opened the sack the wolf had left on the ground. Inside, there was a little duck that the wolf had captured. The duck jumped out of the sack and swam away into the pond.
The wolf’s mouth was on fire from the chili peppers, and he bent down, gulping water from the pond. The clever frog clapped his hands and said:
“Drink up, big bad wolf, the water in this pond is really delicious!”
The clever frog used his wits to outsmart the wolf and save the little duck. He was truly clever.
