The Owl and the Crow
The crow met the owl and said sadly, “Brother Owl, it’s just that our voices are a bit rough and unpleasant to listen to, but people say we’re unlucky birds, and everywhere we go, we annoy people! Life feels so meaningless!”
“I don’t think that way at all,” the owl replied frankly. “The value of a person shouldn’t be measured by what they say, but by what they actually do. Even though my call is unpleasant, I do what I am supposed to do—catching the field mice that ruin the crops. I believe my life is very meaningful!”
The crow rolled his eyes at the owl and said, “Stop pretending to be so noble. You catch mice in the dark—who even knows about it? Even if you’ve done good deeds, who ever praises you for them?”
The owl said, “Doing good just to be recognized and praised by the world is not how we owls do things. As long as I do what I’m supposed to do, even if no one sees or praises me, I can still be at peace with myself, with no regrets or complaints.”
Not long after, people held a grand ceremony to award the “Most Lovable Beneficial Bird.” When the host announced the owl’s name, the crowd was astonished. Even the crow, watching from a distance, couldn’t believe his ears. The host then read the owl’s award speech:
“For many years, the owl has made no attempt to defend itself against people’s misunderstandings but has quietly and diligently caught mice and protected the crops. Through its actions, it has proven its worth, changed people’s misconceptions, and earned their recognition and praise!”
As soon as the host finished reading, the audience erupted into thunderous applause. In the midst of this deafening applause, the crow quietly slipped away.
